I worked at Talbots part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The environment at Talbots was great. It was very team oriented and there were always goals that we were working toward together.
The company holds team meetings as well to keep everyone on the same page and also to promote a sense of unity. Your improvements are always recognized and usually indices with little incentives. Also, management was always very approachable and really seemed to want the best for their employees.
As a whole, Talbots was a great company to work for as an associate.

    Cons

There were no real cons of working for Talbots. If you like working in the retail game, this company is a great employer.

    Advice to Management

The only advice I would really give is what they already do, which is keep the line of communication open.

I have been working at Talbots part-time

    Pros

Talbots has a great employee discount, the customers are a pleasure to work with, and the environment is fun and fast paced.

    Cons

The scheduled hours are not consistent from week to week. One week I might have 30+ hours, and the next 15. The breaks are very short (30 minutes for lunch) and only given to employees working 6+ hours that day. There are rarely opportunities for advancement within the company. Management continues to hire outsiders for positions that could be filled by current, capable employees. It is a great part-time job for someone that wants a discount on clothes, but definitely not an opportunity for a career .

    Advice to Management

Upper management needs to hold store managers more accountable. The extremely high associate turnover rate should be a red flag indicating the store managers do not have the company's best interests at heart.

I have been working at Talbots full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Absolutely love my job and my customers. They do provide benefits, but employees pay for them.Hours are good and you don't have the normal riffraff customer from the mall.

    Cons

Have worked for the company a long time and progressively make less each year,to the tune of $1000 's..No cost of living raise for sure.Expect for you to do a lot of work with less pay.

    Advice to Management

Realize that the employees under the Store Manager are the ones who do the majority of the work. The employees who make more by the hour are the ones who's hours are the first ones to cut, leaving only a few to do the millions of jobs they expect you to do.Impossible.They have lots of motivational conference calls and meetings only to promise things that are not delivered.Team rewards are great if you want to be taxed at a higher bracket at the end of the year.Thats their idea of compensation. We were told we would pay no taxes on the rewards, that the company pays them.people read the fine print, that income is included in employees W2's.That means people that you will pay more taxes...So being dishonest for upper management seems to be the thing to do to manipulate your staff..

I worked at Talbots full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Loved the clothes, loved the marketing and thought it I would stay for a long tome

    Cons

Pay is far below other retailers.
    Lower level management members
Think they have control and will
Cause turmoil to push everyone around.
Long term employees just go along
With the chaos. Managers don't follow the rules
And are left on their own so they make their own hours, disappear for hours and literally spend the day on their own personal errands. The store managers ans assistant managers don't handle hr issues correctly and play into the chaos. Way too
Much moving around and Hiring people
That don't look or play the part of a classy women's clothing store. Somewhat embarrassing with the way they dress and act.

    Advice to Management

Be more selective. Weed out long time managers and new ones too if they are causing dissension. We had a new manager for a while that was talented and knew her stuff but the problems with the assistant were too much to put up
With and the company hired from the outside instead of promoting her which made no sense! So we're back to chaos again cause that one is gone now too and all that is left is the one that causes the problems.

I worked at Talbots (More than a year)

    Pros

Retail work is hard times when economy is done, and sales goals are not being met. They were going through an identity crisis trying to change their core customer target to a younger look, and that was a big mistake. Baby boomers have the money, and will spend if good quality and great service.

    Cons

Too much task work, because of company's merchandising approach. Too many tables of folded shirts, and one customer pulling out one from the bottom is a repeat fold of the stack, and 10 more minutes of labor. Sales goals too unrealistic. Low pay, little bonus opportunity makes tensions tight, and good people leave.

    Advice to Management

Lighten up, reward your sales teams! Word will get out, and you will be able to build a good sales team, instead of good taskers wanting to just get a paycheck. Also, look presentable, and pitch in with a smile.

I have been working at Talbots full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

People first environment that strives to improve performance by positive motivation and training.

    Cons

Retail hours of course and compensation is a little lower than other companies of the same size

    Advice to Management

Talbots is a "customer first company".However, the work flow can sometimes stress the store associates when promotions, heavy shipment, and store set preparation all fall at the same time during heavy traffic/sales periods. Distribution, marketing, and operations need to coordinate more efficiently. It can be a better business decision to put off a new set or promotion if it is going to interfere with customer service. There are only so many hours in the day and sending the heaviest shipment of the year on a holiday week with only one week prep time for processing (during the holiday week) keeps your store staff from being able to give 100% to your customers. Just consider what you are asking of your store associates who are doing the physical labor and producing the income!

I have been working at Talbots part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Management at my store in Phipps Plaza is spectacular! They really care about their employees. Many of the Talbots customers have been shopping with Talbots for years or even decades which makes it really easy and fun to help customers find what they are looking for. Everyone is always in a good mood. The workload is much lighter and more laid back than other retail stores i have worked at & there is room for advancement if you show interest. Not to mention the discount is amazing and the clothes are super cute which makes it easy to be passionate about the company. We also get paid every Friday which is great!

    Cons

You will run across your occasional stuck-up, rude customer but that is expected in all jobs. They really push to sell the credit cards and at times it can get overbearing and unenjoyable. Some customers will complain to you about the quality of the clothing. Customers will often times try to get price adjustments and discounts that are unreasonable, but that is manly the managements duty. If you don't like bagging up the trash, vacumming every opening & closing shift & swiffering the floors regularly then this is not the job for you, but generally these tasks take very little time to complete.
