I worked at Target part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

good pay for a high school graduate, friendly coworkers, great environment, good discounts, schedules made two weeks in advance

    Cons

No matter how hard you work, it's not hard enough. You don't get recognition for doing anything well so everyone does the bare minimum. I got in trouble for taking time to help a customer who asked for help?!?

    Advice to Management

give recognition to those working hard, not everyone who is working slowly is slacking. If someone didn't finish stocking/returns but had to help 6+ guests, they don't deserve to be yelled at.

I have been working at Target full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great team culture, flexible scheduling, strong company with good job security, most of the management worked their way up in the company so they're understanding of your work load.

    Cons

Little room to grow in the company. I have been on the management bench for the last 5 months waiting for a team lead opening in the district and I am more qualified than most of my current managers. Even though they promised me a team lead position as soon as there is an opening, they do not give me a solid time line and are very vague as far as my current standing. They also have an investment in me as a key team member so I do not believe they will be fully willing to send me to another store without me pushing the topic myself.
Unless you are part of the management team, your work schedule will have no consistency at all and It is very annoying.
Hard workers do not get anymore recognition than slackers and it is frustrating.

    Advice to Management

Give credit to critical team members and push for them to move up in the company. If management does not appear to be productive, it will trickle down to team members and they will be reluctant to put out quality work.

I worked at Target part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

10% team discount. You're able to move up the career ladder at Target pretty quickly, depending on your work ethic. Any team member are generally willing to help you, or at least find someone who can assist you. You're trained in more than more department, which makes it possible for more hours and more pay, if you so wish.

    Cons

The public, of course! The constant need to get more Red Cards. The constant need to sell more warranties. The constant need to watch your speed. Management will sometimes break their own rules/guidelines in order to appease certain guests, which will make you (the cashier) appear incompetent.

    Advice to Management

Make it more clear in the job duties the many responsibilities as a cashier (red cards, warranties, checkout speed, conversing with guests, etc.). Also, I understand why Red Cards are so important, but constantly having to ask each guest (and sometimes the same guests) about Red Cards is making the guests frustrated with the cashier. Instead, I would suggest for each Cashier to hand a slip a paper with the many benefits of the Red Card to each guest along with the receipts of their purchase. In this instance, the guests would have their own leisure to decide whether they want a Red Card. They could always come back to open an account at a later time.

I worked at Target full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I definitely enjoyed the diverse group of people that worked there. It was a job that was easy to pick up the skills for and people were always willing to help one another. They were extremely flexible with schedules and were understanding of personal emergencies when I could not be there. The benefits were good when I was there and I managed to build up my 401k and have decent health and dental insurance. Many opportunities were available to volunteer within the community and I took advantage of those.

    Cons

The pay was terrible and the upper management was not very fast, fun, or friendly. Working during the holiday will be a guaranteed meltdown because staffing is never adequate enough for it.
