I have been working at Target part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Excellent training process of upper and lower management, which creates a vital team component that excells during high peaks of customer service and holiday's !

    Cons

Very minimal cons. Target is a corporation that is geared around both customer and employee satisfaction. Without training to promote excellent customer service to provide for customers and without the willingness of customer support for Target's daily success, target wouldn't be a top 5 corporation but it's very little to complain about Target nor find something negative to say about their employee and customer business practices. A sehre gut company !

I have been working at Target full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

They are so great at scheduling around school and other obligations. They hire some really team members. I usually felt valued and supported in my decisions and was given a lot of autonomy. Most of my coworkers were fun to work with, and my input about hiring decisions of seasonal workers was taken into consideration. I was always treated with respect.

    Cons

The wages are very low and the hourly cap at some stores is set at $11 per hour. In have never seen such piddly raises, all while be told how well the store is doing in sales. I disliked the Disney-type atmosphere and being made to feel guilty for not acting giddy all the time. It did take me a while to accept that some people are motivated by coloring contests and posters, etc. Their new Vibe program (writing good things about yourself and posting them) is an ineffective motivational tool. It has been relaunched 3 different times now. We also went 6 months without any apparel team leader, and so far, one month without an executive overseeing apparel either.

    Advice to Management

You need to work on you review process. Telling people that they did great all year, and giving them an eight cent raise afterwards will not motivate them to do better. Having someone take ownership of a department for several months in a row, train 15 new people, and give that person no raise at all because they have reached a "cap" will not get better results in the future. Please make sure your department managers have been in charge of their own department for a while or at least have training before you hand them the reins. If not, some other underling will be the person who is actually running it and not being recognized for it.

I have been working at Target full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Working around a wide variety of interesting people is fun, but the ability to cross-train and have opportunity for career advancement is above all the best perk.

    Cons

Dealing with angry guest from time to time can be high stress, especially as GSTL. But being able to overcome problems and find solutions is very rewarding and makes it worth the tough times.

    Pros

Family environment, diversity and opportunity, clean and upbeat, flexible with school and personal schedules, in most cases they are good about recognizing hard work.

    Cons

Bad communication from the top down, the company cut back with the recession, forcing cuts in positions but leaving the remaining people with double or triple the work and then gave terrible raises. No concept of the time it takes to get certain tasks done. A lot of looking the other way and favoritism. Management sits in offices all day and gets angry when the floor is behind or when mistakes are made. The reviews are sterile and the raises are prorated. Even if you are the best worker the store has, they will alter your review so that when they send it up to corporate the store will not be over budget for raises. The expect more out of you, and pay you less for it, their motto.

    Advice to Management

Be compliant and willing to do other peoples work, come in when they call you in to cover shifts, be outspoken but only about things they want to hear. Show interest in sales and goals. Smile and show excellent guest service.
