I worked at Target part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Worked with great people! Fun job if you don't need the money for your day to day life. Great place to work if you're just starting off or just want a side job.

    Cons

Management lacks communication. Don't rely on anyone to pass on information. All the hype about raising minimum pay to $12 per hour in 2012? Well, sure, if you already work there, otherwise starting pay for new hire is $11. AND, I was a former employee as a GSA, decided to come back 7 months later because they NEEDED me, only to get paid less than I was making and to GSA for less than what cashiers are making. So much for previous work experience with nothing but great employee reviews.

    Advice to Management

If you want/need to hire GSA's or above, perhaps you should pay accordingly!

I worked at Target part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It was fun to work with my fellow team members. Same thing every day, unload truck, stock shelves, send to backstock.

    Cons

Target as a company is really going down hill. They keep creating new teams (eg- Beauty) that are taking unnecessary hours away from departments that need them. Hours are horrible, except during Christmas and sometimes Back to School. Its not uncommon to get 30 hours a week in December then 10 in January. Because of when I started working there, I kept getting the dollar bump ups that they kept adding on. Technically it was nice, but it made me mad that I was making the exact same as the new person walking in when I had been there for three years already.

I worked at Target full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, pays well, upper-corporate leadership sets good goals for the company

    Cons

Management policies and enforcement vary drastically from store to store, and some leaders are absolutely great, while others are terrible.

    Advice to Management

Follow your own policies, don't just set them.

I have been working at Target full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Constantly changing to stay current. Allows growth as individual. Inclusive of all types of people, allowing for learning outside your comfort zone.

    Cons

Low pay for expectations. Long hours, not enough help. Management carries most of the workload. Work life balance non-existent, or rare.

    Advice to Management

Acknowledging the store leadership under the higher management with acceptable pay and hours.

    Pros

Quick to promote as long as you do your job right, Good core values.

    Cons

Expects way too much of cashiers and team members to get Red Cards

    Advice to Management

Focus on great guest service, and not red cards. If we annoy the guests about red cards every time they shop, they won't want to shop with us anymore. I've seen it happen first hand.

I worked at Target full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Most coworkers are awesome.

    Team Atmosphere

    Fast Paced Work Environment

    Cons

Managers aren't always on the same page, giving different directives and priorities

The company seems to be struggling in the online retail space, putting more pressure on in store teams to meet unrealistic goals with little to no training.

Executive Team Leads in Human Resources are supposed to be recruiting "specialists" from other physical retail stores by paying less and offering no commission.

Store Team Leaders are encouraged, via bonus check, to hire as many fresh college graduates as possible regardless of wash-out rate or level of success inside the company of the new hires.

At least at my store there was a Us (management) vs. Them (team members) culture that was encouraged.

    Advice to Management

Stop hiring kids right out of college with no work experience to be Executive Team Leaders. They know nothing, act as if they know everything and damage team morale because they are lacking a work ethic and/or experience in the retail sector.

Promote people from within that have been with the company 2+ years, they already have experience inside the company structure, knowledge of the processes, and are less likely to wash-out.

In my 3 years with the company I was promoted to Team Leader within 2 months of working there. In that short time I watched at least 7 Executive Team Leaders who had never held a job before wash-out and quit leaving the store without a leader for the department for months at a time. I would like to say this increased the work load, but the vast majority of these ETL's didn't actually work, ever. I'm talking about ETL's that literally stand outside because "it's really nice out" when inside the store there's always plenty of work to do. As a team leader/member it's incredibly frustrating to have someone who does nothing for a "leader".
