I worked at Target (More than a year)

    Pros

The Job itself is pretty easy, Point of Sale system takes 5 minutes to learn maybe a week or so to master.

Sometimes you get a really good LOD ( their term for a manager) that can be very helpful in the training purposes

Good Job for Teens/College kids to get experience in retail.

A lot of the cool employees realize the corporate culture is redundant and just keep their head low, you can meet some cool people on the job

    Cons

Passive aggressive hiring and firing techniques, One week you'll be working 39.5 next week you'll be working 5. They work you hard when they need you but once xmas is over they start shedding the weight and cut hours.

The departments are highly segregated, you will never see electronics, stockers, backend, and night shift people depending on where you end up in the company.

The corporate culture is forced and annoying and tacky, they do these meetings where we all stand in a circle and talk about how happy we are to be working and what special thing we did today and then your supposed to nominate some person that was "exceptional".

The managers and employees who've drank the corporate cool-aid are so delusional they form a sort of clique so if you're not mister Target poster child expect some awkward moments.

Work ethic is backwards as all can be, if you are in the front end at least, cashiering. It doesn't matter if you work your rear end off to get the line cleared they want you to sell their "Red Cards" (Credit Card disguised as a store discount card with a 25-35% APR) and this is the main judgment of your performance. You can work at a snails pace as long as you sell red cards.

Management is treated and acts like they are above you, usually Business degree grades looking to etch out some experience in the corporate world.

    Advice to Management

If you're going to stick to that corporate culture, you guys should really do some demographic research to see what would click with your employees.

If you want to sell your red cards, give employee's incentives too instead of punishing them for not selling enough. Selling credit cards is a hard business and it's not what the Cashier's signed up for they aren't sales people they check people out.

If I was the CTO I'd probably separate the whole card thing entirely from the point of sale but they'll never do that because half the reason you sell red cards at checkout is to bait and switch your "Guests" which is totally against your loving family orientated corporate culture.

And while you're at it get some self checkout lanes, you guys have the most sophisticated Loss Prevention out of the big box retailers it wouldn't hurt you to streamline checkout by adding some self-checkout stands.
