I worked at Tarmac full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Big stable company, appear to be busy on the face of it. Trying to become more people friendly. A way to go yet.

    Cons

Dumped for no apparent reason other than cronyism. The people in Tarmac are all fine, but some of the underhand moves are bad and devastate lives. Still a big corporate animal.

    Advice to Management

Open your eyes to the bigger picture.

I have been working at Tarmac full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Tarmac is dynamic and focused on becoming a low cost, high output supplier to the construction industry. Highly variable and requiring good problem solving the work is highly rewarding. Safety is our highest priority.

    Cons

Tarmac can be process driven which stifles entrepreneurs. The processes hold back the organisation and restrict change.

    Advice to Management

Investment in Staff to embrace change is critical

    Pros

Great people, good values and forward thinking

    Cons

Too many restructures and redundancies taking place whilst not looking after those they let go very well.

    Advice to Management

Think ahead before you make changes, consider employee morale and security. Don't make changes to go back on them 6 months later.

I have been working at Tarmac full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Market leading business, always looking to improve and grow - and involves its people in getting there. Great career development opportunities in all areas. Very visible leadership especially the CEO who is personally highly committed to Tarmac and has built his whole career here.

    Cons

Support functions are very tightly run to manage costs, which is fair but which can put pressure on team members to continue to deliver at the same previous level.

I have been working at Tarmac full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Very competitive salary and benefits

Excellent prospects for promotion and development, particularly if you're prepared to change location

Overall there are lots of good people working there

    Cons

Company ethos is not very forward thinking sometimes, there is a lot of "we've always done it this way". Getting positive changes to happen is hard work.

Employee morale and atmosphere can vary widely from place to place and time to time. There is often an 'us and them' attitude between different groups.

Management is a mixed bag, some are clueless and only interested in their own prestige.
