I worked at Tarmac full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Big stable company, appear to be busy on the face of it. Trying to become more people friendly. A way to go yet.

    Cons

Dumped for no apparent reason other than cronyism. The people in Tarmac are all fine, but some of the underhand moves are bad and devastate lives. Still a big corporate animal.

    Advice to Management

Open your eyes to the bigger picture.

I have been working at Tarmac full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Tarmac is a really great company which is fast moving. I originally joined the business back in 2005, but left at the end of 2012 to join Hope Construction Materials which Tarmac founded and then sold. I'm really pleased that I took the plunge and returned to the business in 2016, because the company is now even better than I remember as its much more people focussed than ever.

    Cons

Our systems can sometimes be slow and cumbersome.

    Advice to Management

Continue to increase the focus on people and do as much as possible to increase employee engagement and empowerment,

I worked at Tarmac full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, car and Pension - Good teams to work with on site and within the lower levels of the business.

    Cons

No consideration for the life you have outside of the business, often travelling one end of the country to another. safety culture great on site, but when travelling 6+ hours per day with a full day in-between there is little thought of safety on the road. No progression unless you fill a dead mans shoes and sigh off to enable the day job to be achieved is often slow and monotonous. Very cliquey at a top level

    Advice to Management

Stop competing to see who is the biggest and the best and get the basics right

    I worked at Tarmac full-time

    Pros

Great Training if you show an aptitude - materials and sales in particular - the historic Management expected a lot but gave a lot themselves - they would be shocked to see what the current team to doing.

    Cons

Interesting way of reducing staff at quiet times ! - threats or performance management - take your choice - I saw it so many times - good people who worked hard being threatened by middle management and HR. One offered a job back with the company who told her story and said because of it would never work for Tarmac again - this appeared to be a regular story.

    Advice to Management

Mr Riley, If you don't want to be associated with the staff reduction methods deal with your HR Team.

    Pros

    Good Salary, Bonus, Car Scheme

    Cons

Progression is hard. Waiting for someone to die.
    2 year cycle of redundancies & re-shuffles

    Advice to Management

Find a better way to manage the business rather than all the uncertainty & making people redundant every two years
