Innovative and creative company in the Ed-tech space, with high growth and opportunities
Jul 8, 2022 - Business Development Manager in Manchester, EnglandRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
- International feel with offices/colleagues around the world - Well known reputation in the teacher recruitment industry which helps with outreach - We sell products that actually work and prospects see value in - A very clear mission and values which is evident in all product lines and the generally direction that the company is pulling into - Decent commission structure - Very good autonomy - Weekly company wide meetings - Most colleagues have a background in teaching/ed-tech/education/SAS -Strong marketing team that help draw in inbound leads - Fun culture - Product team always driving change and improving the product - Three core product lines with opportunities for cross-sell - Opportunities for travel (particularly 2023 and beyond) - Remote working policy - Recently the company was acquired by a holding company, which will add to career development opportunities and investment in product development/marketing.
Cons
- We do seem to have a higher staff turnover in some departments than you would expect for a medium sized company (75 employees), but this is an industry wide trend (particularly over the pandemic and thereafter). - Perhaps not a good fit for someone that cannot work independently; we have a remote working policy (UK team), but for me this is a positive

Pros
It’s a great place to get a start in your career. Since it is a smaller organization you can learn a lot. Many of the people who work there have a background in education and are super friendly and open.
Cons
Since it is a smaller organization there is limited career growth. Total compensation package isn’t super incentivizing/motivating.

People stay because they care about the students not because they like the company

It is an easy way to get into Hungary. They provide you with ample support in immigration and accommodation They provide a fair amount materials
Cons
The authority of the bilingual teacher is frequently questioned, and they are given limited recourse for discipling students Management often blames teachers for things beyond their control They are authoritarian in what they expect of teaching Upper level management is frequently rude and condescending They have not learned the lesson to never have a meeting when you can send an email. They have expanded too fast and are running the company in a way that would have worked when it was a third of the size but is clearly falling apart now.

Great People -
Feb 4, 2021 - Placement Coordinator in Toronto, ONRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The people who work here were overwhelmingly positive, friendly, and fun to hang out with during my time here. Extra-curricular events and activities were great. Depending on the program you work, you can truly feel like you are helping people achieve their dreams. The experience you gain here can assist your resume. Potential to travel for work depending on the position. Yearly stipend for full time employees towards Professional Development. Overall, I enjoyed my time here. I would recommend working here.
Cons
Limited potential for salary increases regardless of performance. Given that the company takes on lots of contracts with 3rd parties and not every program works out - mass layoffs occurred numerous times during my time here. Do not expect consistent year over year salary increases. As an employee, always be prepared for the fact you may be laid off (although this realistically applies for any start up company tbh).

Glass Door? More like Glass Ceiling..
May 2, 2017 - Anonymous Employee in Toronto, ONRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Think of this job as a means to an end. If you are just looking to get some business experience and don’t really have aspirations of anything more; like progressing your career or earning more... certainly, work here. If you subscribe to the work hard, play hard mentality you can certainly earn yourself some free beers.
Cons
This company has no integrity. They value cheap labour over quality and talent. If you manage to stay over a year do not expect much in the way of a salary increase. There is a compensation package in place to keep expectations low, very low. It utilizes ambiguous language which is immeasurable: “Change the trajectory of the world” - get a $1000 bonus.. That is if you manage to stay.. The company has regular lay offs.. I’m talking several times a year.
Continue readingThanks for the feedback. We are committed to creating a comfortable, transparent and collaborative environment for all our employees, so I’m disappointed to hear about some of your experiences and encourage you to raise any issues directly with your manager. We’ve worked hard to create a company where people are valued and feel empowered to succeed and grow. We value all feedback and we’ll continue to find ways to improve. I want to address a couple of your specific concerns here. First, as Teach Away continues to mature we always look for ways to improve our company. We need to remain agile and responsive as a company in order to seize opportunities in an ever changing market. This means managing the delicate balance between staffing and company needs. Not unlike other businesses as they grow, we have recently had to make difficult decisions to better align the company with future opportunities. We hire people who love education, travel and technology and want to grow professionally in this space. As an organization committed to employee growth, we are happy to invest in the professional development of all Teach Away employees through our annual PD fund. Each employee is given an allowance that can be allocated to any external development opportunities aligned to their personal professional growth. While we do value our “work hard – play hard” culture, we are also very committed to supporting the work/life balance of our employees. Of course, there are exceptions at times, however most of the time it is rare to see employees at the office before 9am or after 5pm. If you are feeling overworked or that your goals are unrealistic I would encourage you to discuss this with your manager so we can work to resolve the expectations gap that you’ve mentioned above. Finally, we regularly review our compensation packages to ensure that we pay competitive salaries aligned with the industry averages. We are a pay for performance culture where attitude matters. We reward people for hard work, dedication and for being awesome. Thank you for your ongoing contribution and feedback. It is truly appreciated.
