I have been working at Teach for America full-time

    Pros

Mission-driven work with similarly driven colleagues

    Cons

Lack of integrity in management - TFA perpetuates internally plenty of systems of oppression that they actively talk about interrupting in their work with teachers. Additionally, most line managers get no management training when they're hired so there are a lot of people who are incompetent managers.

I have been working at Teach for America full-time

    Pros

Commitment to educational equity, open to gathering feedback from employees and constituents and using that information to improve and grow. Constantly developing.

    Cons

Culture differs depending on your direct manager. Some managers are more competent than others, affecting the progress of the entire team. Lack of transparency in terms of salary. Very high demands but little pay.

I worked at Teach for America full-time

    Pros

    Great benefits
Above average compensation for non-profit, a touch below charter networks, etc
Extremely caring and flexible work environment and managers
    Lots of responsibility early on

    Cons

Org was a bit confused on mission / message when I was there
Very young workforce, with associated pros / cons
High turnover / varied quality and investment by national partner colleagues

    Advice to Management

You can't please everyone. Clarify why you exist and what strategy you wish to employ . Then execute it.

I have been working at Teach for America full-time

    Pros

Shared vision, looks good on a resume, learn teaching skills

    Cons

Little support, long time to answer emails, runs like a traditional NP hit and miss. Too many support staff and never enough teachers. They hide all the costs until you start training.

    Advice to Management

Be honest up front about what is needed to succeed. This includes costs, and difficulty to pass the Praxis test

I have been working at Teach for America full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Employee autonomy; flexible work schedule; broad perspective on education and schools in Chicago; opportunity to work with new teachers who are developing their perspective on education.

    Cons

High staff turnover; regional leadership team disconnected from ground level practice; management top-heavy; working through layers to impact student achievement/non-manager coaching role.

    Advice to Management

Transparency after a decision has been made isn't transparent decision making - it's secretive. A leadership development focused organization has no business recruiting and placing novice teachers. Develop leadership on your kids. Not mine.
