I worked at Teach for America full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - I would never have found this career path without TFA (have now been teaching for many years)
    - I loved the community I taught in
    - I loved my students
    - My students achievement as a result of my teaching was undeniable (data)

    Cons

    - Lack of diversity within the program
    - Lack of effort on corp members' part to assimilate and get to know the culture and community where they teach
    - Lots of talk, little action
    - Struggling colleagues were unsupported by staff, resulted in majority leaving/quitting the program and teaching for good
    - Little to no helpful professional development training
    - Did not relate to other corp members' backgrounds and mindsets

    Advice to Management

I feel I was a one in a hundred candidate for this job. It changed my life because I am now a life-long teacher. Despite my age and inexperience, my life's path prepared me for this work. I don't think many other TFA corp members have been exposed to poverty and its cancerous influence on everything it touches, As a result, I saw more TFAs fail, quit, lose hope, and write off teaching as a profession -- which is, to me, unfortunate and should be addressed by TFA's leadership teams,

I worked at Teach for America full-time

    Pros

Good way to knock a chunk off of student loans.
    Attend various, helpful workshops

    Cons

Sending ill-prepared "teachers" with the wrong ideologies for their scholars, into unfamiliar areas, situations, demographics...Seeing too many teachers handle scholars as the same kid, same violation, when it's not the case.

    Advice to Management

Find those who TRULY want to change the dynamics in the classroom and outside of it. Seeing a lot of folks in it for the wrong reasons

    Pros

Doing great work with people who are passionate about improving the lives of kids through education. Challenging work with smart people equals a great learning environment.

    Cons

Multiple years of layoffs/job uncertainty. No clear pathway for advancement/ Compensation is not competitive

    Pros

Opportunity to make a huge impact on a community and learn about yourself along the way. Quickly allows you to sharpen conflict resolution skills.

    Cons

Teaching is always hard no matter what training program you go through. The fact that you don't know much about how to teach may lead you to teach in new and interesting ways.

    Advice to Management

Be sure to recruit qualified on the ground managers in the regions. Identify top talent the second they walk into the classroom and groom them to become your future teacher-leaders.

I have been working at Teach for America full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The focus on social justice, race and class, identity, culturally responsive teaching, and equity is very inspiring. The organization is shifting to be more of an anti-oppressive organization, and have taken huge strides in that area from even before 5 years ago.

    Cons

A lot of people are still learning about their own identity which can feel hard for people who have already been working on developing their consciousness. There's still a ton of inequity and oppressive structures on staff.

    Advice to Management

Take the time to make TFA's practices more transparent. Ask more feedback of staff on how they're experiencing they're time on staff.

I worked at Teach for America full-time

    Pros

You can make a few (I emphasize a few) great friendships. You get an Americorp award if you haven't received it already.

    Cons

They focus on Black and White tensions but ignore the histories of Hispanics, Natives and Asians. Many of the institute employees have a White Knight mentality in which they believe their way is the best way and look down on veteran teachers who have not been involved with TFA. There is no responsibility taken for the lack of progress the organization has shown throughout the last 25 years. At times it feels like a cult. Their political branch has a man who is homophobic running it. I would never recommend anyone work for this organization. It was honestly the worst decision I made.

    Advice to Management

    Practice your values, particularly humility.
