I worked at Teacher Created Materials, Inc full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice coworkers, great benefits and positive community outreach. I believed in our product.

    Cons

Poor management by several key managers. Constant changes in department structure in 2016 made them feel like they didn't know what they were doing. Lots of good staff quit or were fired as a result.

I have been working at Teacher Created Materials, Inc full-time

    Pros

I honestly don't know where all of the negative reviewers work within the company. The department I'm in is fun, positive, and creative. Employees receive plenty of positive reinforcement for a job well done, which is nice. The managers all have families, and understand the importance of being available for your kids. We have a lot of great events to promote teamwork within the company and to highlight employees who exemplify our core values.

    Cons

I can't think of any. The work day is flexible, the people are nice, compensation and benefits are good... and free ice cream!

    Advice to Management

Thank you for encouraging your employees to collaborate and grow within the company!

    Pros

Dedicated staff who deserve a better place to work...

    Cons

The friendly people are NOT the managers or those who think they are executives. People do not stay here - the high turnover proves it. Teachers beware - you don't want to work in the editorial department. If you've been employed here for 2 years, you are an old-timer.

    Advice to Management

Address the high turnover and change the management.

I worked at Teacher Created Materials, Inc full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - The [outside] possibility of creating much needed learning materials for children and educators. Materials that will help to shape and grow a young mind while helping teachers to be better, more effective educators. (This is a huge responsibility, but also an honor and a wonderful way to spend your time.)

    - The history products are top-notch! This is the best thing they do here.

    Cons

TCM features a toxic, political, unfriendly environment that constantly fails to promote creativity, communication, talent, and quality products.

The management is only concerned with keeping their jobs, and will sacrifice the quality of the product and their own team for this. Management (here I am referring to the editorial management) is greatly threatened by talent, and will conceal talent to the point of outright lying about the quality of an employee to upper-management.

The goal of providing quality learning and teaching materials is hardly ever met. Instead, materials are poorly edited, and only at a surface level when they are.

There is a complete resistance to improving process and efficiency via technology. Any suggestions to do so are viewed as a threat to the tech-ignorant management.

Nepotism - lot's of it. Constant promoting and hiring of friends and family. And this is related to the worst problem at TCM, a complete lack of variation and culture amongst the editorial team. They are constantly hiring the same person over and over, people with the same skill sets, same backgrounds, same education, etc... The CEO argues that it is easier to train teachers to edit than it is to train editors to teach - but when there is no one with editorial experience on staff it creates massive problems. Also, the lack of variation is boring.

The editorial staff is 90% female. I would like to believe this is by coincidence, but it isn't - their hiring practices are biased and sexist.

There is no training program, and there is no feedback - there is no way to improve the process and make it better.

The math and science products are very poorly done. There is false information within their science texts, and the math products are uninspiring and boring.

The turnover rate is incredibly high amongst editorial assistants and interns.

And finally, there is no "thank you for what you do". There is no appreciation. What a miserable place to have spent my time.

    Advice to Management

Get a non-biased opinion of how your company is being run. Hire an outside consultant to review the processes and systems that you have in place, and to review these against their actual execution. Bring the female:male ratio closer to 50:50. Stop hiring friends and family. Get rid of those who are incompetent.

In the interest of children and teachers, stop producing all products other than your history themed products (that is the best thing you guys do).

Realize that you are being played by some of your long-time employees. Realize that they have compromised the quality of the team and the culture that you could have built by now. Be honest with yourself - you know what I am talking about.

I have been working at Teacher Created Materials, Inc full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - People: Hardworking, sharp, and passionate employees who really believe in the company's mission. It's nice to work somewhere where you feel that you're making a positive difference in the world & work alongside others who are driven by the same passion.
    - Culture: Fun, fast-paced and challenging environment. Hard-work pays off with benefits, bonuses, 24/7 free treats (ice-cream, Peets and Starbucks coffee), and employee events.

    Cons

    - A lot of demanding work and tight deadlines. Almost every department has a busy season requiring long hours.

    Pros

Some good people work here but they are not appreciated and most get burnt out and leave. You will learn how to deal with a high stress environment and learn how to bite your tongue.

    Cons

Where to begin, the salaries are not fair for the amount of work and stress this company puts you through. You are encouraged to speak up, but then knocked for it when you do. There are a lot of questionable things that come out from behind closed doors at this company. Started as a family business but has gone completely downhill especially in the last year and a half.

The review about it being a family company is probably written by one of the many "yes" men in management. If you do as your told by upper management and don't care about being encouraging or appreciating your teammates then you will get far. There is an EXTREME lack of moral at this company. They have lost a large amount of people and still do not get the hint. They have been told numerous times that they will continue to lose people if they do not change. If they continue to treat people the way they do this company will crumble. It will seem great at first until you really see how they run things there. You've been warned.

Also, many people have left due to stress induced health issues that were non-existent previous to employment here. That's a blaring sign it is not a healthy place to work, mentally or physically.

HR issues will arise, you can try telling someone to get support but nothing is ever done. People don't speak up because A. nothing will be done and B. they don't want to lose their jobs like previous employees who have been honest.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to listen to the people, there are way too many people allowed to make decisions there. Stop asking people to be honest when you plan to push them out after doing so. People there are unhappy. It is the whisper behind closed doors and the talk between cubicles. You will continue to lose employees if you don't stop seeming so money hungry and value the work the people do there. It's very clear the sales team is praised and rewarded with gifts and benefits, but the people who work so hard to write, edit and design the product are not given the same amount of appreciation. This company is falling apart from the inside, please open your eyes!
