I have been working at Teachers On Call part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great customer service, A lot of job opportunities, Safe schools, Great learning environment, opportunities to advance.

    Cons

I dislike the service they use to tell you about a job opening. It gets annoying getting phone calls early in morning and in the afternoon about openings.

    Pros

You can work when you want, i.e. flexible schedule. Select the assignments that are most interesting. Get paid on a regular basis.

    Cons

Can't always work when you need to, i.e. sometimes there aren't any suitable assignments. No work in the summer, which can make things very tight. I don't care for early morning calls for assignments; greatly prefer knowing the day before.

"TOC Hires and Maintains Subs for St. Paul, MN schools"

    Pros

I tried to advise them about my six years experience with St. Paul schools but they did not want to listen.

    Cons

Teachers on Call has the exclusive staffing contract to provide on call daily substitute teachers for St. Paul, MN schools. Pursuant to extreme student behavior problems in the district, the district could not find enough substitute reserve teachers on its own for everyday assignments. They were always chronically and dangerously short-staffed and the head of the St. Paul Human Resource department gave the problem situation to TOC. There are some serious issues which are not being addressed in St. Paul schools and I don’t think TOC is giving its teachers full information on the district.
The student behaviors in St. Paul schools can be abusive and dangerous for an on call sub and neither the district or TOC has done anything to remedy the situation. Most recently as of December 2015 a regular teacher was assaulted at Central High and had to be hospitalized because of a head injury. This news was in all the newspapers and TV stations but TOC has done anything to keep its subs apprised of the situation. As of this date, that teacher has filed a lawsuit against the district for negligence and promoting unsafe conditions. This inner city district has many problem EBD, Special Ed and mean, abusive students and the district does nothing to deal with the issues. They wish to keep all students in school no matter how abusive they are and are strongly discouraging the suspension or expulsion of any black student.
Moreover, the teaching and support staff at each school site are very unsupportive, unfriendly and unhelpful and subs are left on their own. It is generally a very abusive environment were no good deed goes unpunished. As it relates to subs, any administrator or any teacher can put an “adverse evaluation” in any teacher’s file and this is very unfair. Anyone can judge the sub on “knowledge of subject matter” or “good classroom management” even when they may not have seen or been in the same room as the sub.
Extreme caution is advised when subbing for TOC for jobs in St. Paul schools. It is a dangerous district filled with abusive administrators, unfriendly staff and disturbed students.

    Advice to Management

Keep substitutes apprised of troubling students behaviors in the district.

I have been working at Teachers On Call part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

flexible schedule. You can literally use the online calendar to mark off the days you don't want to work. As many as you want. No questions asked!

    Cons

Its on call so the schedule is not layed out very far ahead of time. (but you can choose to take off any days that you want so in my opinion its not a problem.

    Advice to Management

If you want to work, sometimes you have to just plan to wake up at 6:00 am and wait for them to call you. There usually will be an assignment, but you might just not know the location until the morning of.
If working with ECC (early child care) keep in mind that New Horizon centers work on a ratio basis and send you home early a lot. Montessori Centers usually post an accurate time of the hours you are needed
