I worked at Tecolote Research full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The benefits were fantastic. Tecolote paid for health insurance and funded employee pension plan and stock/profit option plans. Tecolote strives for low turnover rates. Excellent management.

    Cons

Most work effort is with the government, which can place more knowledgeable commercial contractors being directed by unqualified government employees.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work!

I have been working at Tecolote Research full-time

    Pros

Ability to access unlimited online trainings, good work-life balance. They want you to stay here a long time, offer fantastic company-paid retirement plan and company-paid healthcare and dental, though there is a large deductible. Also, every employee gets a share of the company. Really positive, laid-back work culture.

    Cons

Lowest possible pay. The only training is online. Not very much personnel management or source control, which can be a good thing if what you value is ultimate freedom over efficiency.

    Advice to Management

More hands-on managers would be a huge plus. Much better pay would make it easier to fill positions and make your employees feel more valued.

I worked at Tecolote Research full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Fully paid family health care, vision, dental; great retirement pension. The pros stop there.

    Cons

Terrible pay - and management knows this. They always remind you that the benefits and retirement is great, and it is...but people have to live. Absolutely ZERO training. I asked for training multiple times, never happened. Micro-management at it's finest. I thought I was back in the 8th grade on multiple occasions. Absolutely zero chance for advancement, or even a raise. The employee performance reviews are an absolute joke - and nothing is based on it. Some of the managers there are good people, and do good work - but there are some that are absolutely awful and have no idea how to manage people or even the work. The culture there is one of fear - managers don't want to make a decision, and often cannot, without upper management signing off. Forget about ever trying to recommend or change things, nobody wants to hear it - "This is the way we have always done it," is what you'll hear. The employee turnover over the last year has been extremely high - and a normal person would think that management would do something to stop this, but NOPE. They just "keep on keeping on", and the turnover keeps going on too.

    Advice to Management

Let people do their jobs and stop micro-managing and getting involved in EVERYTHING. Actually pay your people - that means the current employees that do their work. Also - you won't get quality people unless you offer decent pay, point blank.

I worked at Tecolote Research full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Tecolote offers interesting work with cost estimating of government projects. There's opportunity to use your knowledge of math and statistics. The people are great and very helpful.

    Cons

Tecolote serves the government sector. The government typically contracts for support for a handful of years or so and then re-contracts the work.

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at Tecolote Research full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Limitless opportunities to learn valuable skills if you are self-motivated. The work can be as interesting as you make it. Plenty of room for experimentation if you prove yourself capable.

    Cons

Not a lot of support or teamwork. You will likely have to be a one woman/man show. You will be met with a lot of opposition from other groups and this can be frustrating. Be prepared to argue (this could be a pro for some people). You will find this job frustrating if you are a perfectionist.

    Advice to Management

Make training relevant to the job it's far too abstract. The two week cram-course only causes stress and diminished self-confidence.

I have been working at Tecolote Research (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Provides an excellent culture to develop analytical skills in a team environment. The company truly values its employees far more than the average consulting firm. Benefits and retirement plans are excellent.

    Cons

Base salary is low and can be difficult for an entry level analyst.

I have been working at Tecolote Research full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Best benefits you will find.
Strong work/life balance with the government.
Great training program for junior analysts.
They have hiring down to a science. Don't always hire to fill a void.
They invest in their strongest performers.

    Cons

Mainly government contracts which are always recompeted meaning uncertainty for future work and can sometimes limit pay (but generally in line with the GS pay scale).

Initial pay is a little low but there are large raises early on.
