"Re-Live the Discovery of the Americas. Basically a Spanish government office in Miami. Very bureaucratic Environment."

    Pros

There is very good talent within the organization. Management levels are basically groomed employees from Spain main office in Europe, to take care of short and long term agenda and keep American operations in-line.

Needless to say, Spanish language is dominant lingo. No such thing as open door policy, more like a one way door policy.

Base pay scales for Sales are descent, with poorly structured commissions designed to cap income. Unrealistic targets with stale services. Other pay scales for permanent in-house positions are just ok, they are approx. 20% less than market equivalent.

Base pay scales for Presales Engineers are ok, approx 35% less than market equivalent. Presales teams are drowned with administrative and financial matters daily matters. Ratio of engineering vs administrative work is 30/70. Mostly due to outdated internal legacy systems.

Where Telefonica fails in pay, they do a decent job in fully paid benefits package to include Medical, Dental, short and long term disability pay.

    Cons

HQ in Spain focuses in relocating personnel from withing Europe (Spain) to fill the positions in Miami via VISA procedures.

USA operations go through the formalities of announcing job positions that quietly get filled by ... yes you guest it!

The ratio of permanent full time employees versus what they call externals is 80/20 approx. (70-80% Spaniards / South American relocation from Telefonica subsidiaries (e.g. Chile, Argentina, Brazil, etc.) and 20% externals which are essentially subcontractors with inferior pay scales and benefits to maintain labor headcounts low.

    Growth opportunity, very limited.
Training, very limited or close to none.
Job tools, very limited and controlled by outdated systems from Spain.
Order processes - very complex and outdated
HR is monitored by a body from Spain which is very hands off

    Advice to Management

Get more local talent... and eliminate exploits of external contracted employees with inferior pay and benefits for USA. Invest in ENGLISH language training!!!

I have been working at Telefónica full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to work in a Global Company, with offices and business units all over the world.
Not only a learning experience from the Telecommunication perspective, but also from marketing and products.

    Cons

It will always privilege Spanish people for major and higher positions and roles before giving them than local people, even though the position may not be in Spain (company headquarters). So, not necessarily competences and results are taken into consideration when promoting or recognizing someone.
Be prepared to be very political if you want to achieve professional growth within the group. If you don't have a great relationship with influential people, you will most likely never grow.
Due to its size and age, there are plenty of protocols, systems, bureaucracies to follow before having anything done. You have to be very patient and anticipate plenty exchange of emails, meetings and phone call before getting anything done.

    Advice to Management

Recognize people for their achievements locally and promote the team in each country, rather than bringing more and more people from Headquarters, who, not necessarily, are experts in the north american market. Things here are absolutely different than anywhere else in the group and this should be taken into consideration.
