    I worked at Tellabs full-time

    Pros

    Tellabs had a great reputation in the telecom field for many years. Had a work environment, insurance, benefits and vacation time that helped the work/life balance. Training program was great and learned a lot while there.

    Cons

    Once customer started to basically get hardware for free or at a loss with promises of software updates in the future it was all downhill from there. Layoffs started to occur on a quarterly basis and many employees were just looking out for themselves and made the work environment so tense.

    Advice to Management

    Never give away hardware at a loss or come up with technology that you can sell at a premium.

    Pros

    All employees I knew were hard working at their job. Most employees were easy to work with and had a team spirit.

    Cons

    Quality issues have given company a bad name, especially for the HW products.
    Customer service issues drained engineering resosurce time.
    Product positioning and Market analysis is poor.
    The Salaries and benefits in the SF bay area were not competitive.
    The stock options were poor and not very competitive in the SF bay area .
    The management in chicago were inexperienced with bay area employees and its culture.
    I heard much more communican about charity requests then I did about employee accomplishments and account wins, customer issues, etc.

    Advice to Management

    Spend money on marketing that performs market research, competitive and strategic management.
