I worked at Telstra full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Company of great opportunity that has immense breadth and depth. Many excellent people. Great conditions including work from home, very competitive remuneration. Lots of opportunity to move within the organisation and get exposure to a variety of roles and experiences. Generally there is reward for effort and performance - although Exec appointments often external over internal creating a 'ceiling' for many at GM level.

    Cons

Hard nosed cost reduction focus since Thodey has left is driving a lot of good people from the organisation. This may come back to haunt a year or more down the track - especially given existing complexities that in some areas no one understands anymore. Significant ongoing restructures in many parts of the organisation impacts culture and behaviours as change fatigue and job insecurity erode confidence, engagement and performance. Company has struggled to effectively address legacy complexity to remain competitive - this is driving the more extreme actions described above - risk is agenda (driven via external consultancy) is blunt instrument that not attuned to where the real opportunities lie....or true cost of change.

    Advice to Management

Narrow the spread of 'bets' to ensure the must win changes are successfully delivered. CEO LT needs to invest more in understanding where IT really is and cultivating more realistic plans to address. This cannot be solved by a silver bullet and needs an achievable 5 year plan. To date successive leadership too eager to be sold the golden goose from one CIO after another - all who feel they have to have a 'silver bullet' plan to get and keep their jobs, when it's just not feasible. IT change must become a CEO LT central platform.

I worked at Telstra full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Process and Procedures are all documented. It's very regimented, and structured.

    Cons

It's difficult to make a significant difference as you're a small fish in a big pond. Management tends to manage upwards and self-promote rather than looking after their resources. Management does not entertain remote working opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Look after your current resources and talent. You'd save the company time and money by looking after the resources that you have invested in, rather than chewing them up and spitting them out.

I have been working at Telstra full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Product Knowledge and Training modules
Employee Share Program free 100 shares a year
    25% Discount off Telstra Bill
$0 Staff Mobile Phone Plan that has unlimited calls and text with 15gb data & discounted handsets costs
Quarterly commission if meeting KPI target
    Monday-Friday with Weekends off

    Cons

    Not enough individual recognition
Difficult to be flexible and ARL approval process is inconsistent
No real role progression if working in a call centre. A who you know and not what you know progression ladder.
    Unreliable systems and IT changes
Inconsistent measures and KPI targets that Change weekly / monthly.

    Advice to Management

Focus on your staff and stop with the customer is always right mentality. Reward your staff and look after them. They are your biggest advocate. Overseas agents can be great, but investing in less Australian workers is showing in customer net promoter scores.
