I have been working at Telvent full-time

    Pros

The Esri-based ArcFM product suite is an important product for the utility industry, with a good and growing reputation, and significant potential. The work we performed was interesting and the Product, Product Support, and Application teams consisted of a good group of motivated and dedicated people that were fun to work with.

    Cons

The biggest challenge was a manager who was promoted too far up, that caused a large number of people to leave. This manager is no longer with the company.

    Advice to Management

Offer more competitive salaries to employees. We found that most of us who left received significant pay increases from the new companies we joined.

    Pros

The work is very challenging and there is plenty of opportunity to use problem solving skills. Great health benefits and stock options.

    Cons

The smaller office often 'bucks the system' of the larger company with regard to common practices. The culture is very closed and isolated. After 9 months, I am still not considered part of the team with those who have been here a long time.

    Advice to Management

Work-life balance should be incorporated at every level of employee, larger corporate objectives should carry larger weight.

    Pros

Larger company with potential for employee growth and global opportunities.

    Cons

Too much margin focused from corporate office in Spain. Projects lost the uniqueness and were see only for revenues, hence project life cycle development suffered and system for project delivery were of lesser importance.

    Advice to Management

With the acquisition by Schneider Electric, more codified structure will help in defining and implementing PLC methodologies, which will further help the margins sought.

I have been working at Telvent full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Alot of good Training Opportunities, I get comfortable with my job within a month in designing, implementing and deploying the system as an engineer
    - Good pay and benefits and very good location (close to train station)
    - Clear outlook on your career progression

    Cons

    - I am not sure if this applies to other positions, but getting contracted out off-site have no perks , i don't have additional pay, very hard to get overtime paid and can be of very long duration as well. And in the group that I was in, there are alot of it.

    Advice to Management

    - more compensation is needed for people that need to work offsite if you want to keep employees.

I have been working at Telvent full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Lots of opportunities to learn (if you're lucky enough)
    - Great chance to network with clients and industry
    - Generally relaxed work environment

    Cons

    - Little effort devoted to onboarding
    - Among other juniors I've worked with there doesn't seem to be consistent amounts of opportunity to learn and grow irrespective of drive and ability, really it comes down to how busy your group is.
    - Having all hour being directly billable to customer is stressful for those still finding their feet.
    - Seems too niche. Everyone that I know \ heard of who has left goes on to work somewhere else in Oil & Gas IT sector. Probably the nature of Calgary.

    Advice to Management

Good job on centralizing new hire intake to one group. Hopefully that makes for a more consistent experience.

I have been working at Telvent full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of learning to take in. Complex system.
Mostly good people to work with.

    Cons

Lack of documentation on release as well as development in general.
Bad with communications as what's going on with the company. Though there has been great effort to get this out but still at a very high level and vague.
No salary scale so really people with a few years experience might be getting paid the same as 1-year experience (but this might be happening over many companies out there).
Lower pay compared to other companies out there (or so we think).

    Advice to Management

Communication to your team with project updates and company vision/working towards.
Don't budget too tight and try to chase the margin. Please allow people to claim administrative time (such as filling out timesheet time, company communication sessions instead of scrambling to find a place to put in the hour). Management knows about the pain, yet have done nothing to fix this...
