I have been working at Ten Speed Press full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Ten Speed is a relatively small company and it feels very personal and close. You learn a lot about both small scale and global publishing. Random House has great insurance and other benefits as a company. We get $500 fitness reimbursements, a lot of free books, an every other Friday off in the summer.

    Cons

It seems for the most part, only those with higher salaries are the ones who get promoted regularly. Not uncommon to be an assistant or associate for years.

    Pros

The setting is beautiful, the people are fun and unique, it is an unorthodox place.

    Cons

Because the company is so loosely structured, decision making can be difficult, and it is hard to navigate the internal politics.

    Advice to Management

    More structure

    Pros

Ten Speed is a small, independent company. The work atmosphere is casual, and the people that work there are open minded. The building is airy with lots of natural light. There's a yoga class once a week.
Ten Speed puts out a wide range of books, from cookbooks to career to kid's picture books.

    Cons

Because it's a small company it has limited budget resources. That means lower than average salaries compared with others in the publishing industry. Even though it's a small company, there is limited communication between the upper management and the rest of the company in terms of how the business is doing, etc.

    Advice to Management

    Keep the staff more informed.

  4. "Good company. Nice people. Mature culture."

    Pros

Ten Speed is a fantastic example of interpersonal communication and a supportive work environment. Employees are friendly, accommodating and truly want you to succeed in your tasks. Everyone enjoys the work and the company of their colleagues. Projects are steady, interesting, and you also get some books for free, so it's perfect for a reader!

    Cons

If you're in your early 20s, and looking for a company that has a very young and active culture, Ten Speed Press wouldn't be the best place. Many of the people who work there are married and have children. The maternal/paternal nature of the company adds to its charms, but could be considered boring if you want more excitement.

    Pros

Free books. Nice coworkers. Nice location. And perks like parties.

    Cons

The pay was very low. And they tell you flat out that there is no way you're going to work your way into another department.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within. Especially if you have employees who work hard, show you their talent and are clearly qualified.

I worked at Ten Speed Press full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Tsp publishes interesting books. Focus is on quality of product and winning awards. So relatively interesting work considering it's the publishing industry.

    Cons

Good luck moving up within the company. Saw many longtime employees pushed out or laid off. No respect for work/life balance. Management had little investment in helping subordinates learn and grow. Upper management holds all the power, whether they are familiar with your department or not. Dept manager had little control.

    "Is bigger better?"

    Pros

Now that it's part of Crown, Ten Speed has the $$ and infrastructure it needs to compete in the ever-changing world of trade publishing.

    Cons

Despite best efforts to preserve it, it's inevitable that Ten Speed's independent spirit will fade.

    Advice to Management

Don't forget where you came from.
