I worked at Teradata full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Their relatively decent. It's a bit of a corporate maze. Easy to get stuck in a rut if you're not careful. They had some absolutely brilliant people working in support and some absolutely idiotic people working in dev.

    Cons

Their infrastructure for software is jacked up like any large company.

    Advice to Management

Worry about those directly under you...not the rules

I have been working at Teradata full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Very smart and talented coworkers who are willing to collaborate and share knowledge.
    - Relaxed work environment.
    - Good continuing education opportunities.

    Cons

    - Few paths for advancement. I can't figure how to move up from my current role.
    - Employees who behave badly (read HR violations) are retained as long as they continue to generate income.
    - Hyper-siloed organization

    Pros

    - Friendly co-workers
    - I was able to do a lot of great work for my teammates during the time that I was there
    - Relaxed office culture - new office setting really helped with this
    - Recurring meetings with manager to discuss performance
    - Company provided training to teammates on Amazon Web Services and Agile Scrum
    - All of the interns that worked at the same location appeared to do meaningful work for their respective teams. I'd recommended it for students who want to do meaningful work
    - Work/life balance: company really likes to focus on this. It was nice being able to go home at a little after 5pm on nearly all of the days I worked
    - 401k: it's pretty good for full time employees

    Cons

    - I was more of a consultant than an intern at the company. My teammates asked me to come up with software solutions to problems they had, and I implemented them
    - It was not always clear who I could go to in order to get the help I needed to do the work I was assigned
    - Was not assigned a mentor that could help me with technical problems
    - I don't easily see how I would be able to advance into a higher position if I decided to join the company full time

    Advice to Management

    - If you want to acquire good talent, then you're going to have to pay for it
    - Take calculated risks so you can stay competitive
    - Telling people that you're a "company in transition" is only going to work for so long. Make sure you are acting on it

    Pros

I was hired into Teradata's marketing division at the end of 2014. I had actually had an offer for a different department earlier in the year but declined because it didn't seem like management had a clear path to where they were going.

About six months later I got a call about another job in an area what seemed like it might have potential, so I took it. That turned out to be a mistake.

About all I can say is that benefits were good and the people are good, but there was no clear product vision and everything started crashing around us. Eventually most of the management in the marketing division were let go and the division was sold and I became part of the buyer's company, ending my short tenure at Teradata. From what I can tell it looks like Teradata has a new CEO and are making better decisions but since I am no longer there I can't tell from the inside.

    Cons

When I was in Teradata's marketing division there was no clear product vision. They also had heavy development processes even though they said they were "agile".

    Advice to Management

Pick a direction and stick with it. Keep shedding bad layers of management and processes. Don't go after business opportunities without a clear vision for what you are going to do with it.
