I have been working at Teradata full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Learning, working on latest technology, good leadership, great clients to work with, great exposure for analytics, good salary and benefits

    Cons

If you don't like travel, this might not be a job for you. Requires at least 70% travel a year, Monday thru Thursday.

    Advice to Management

Probably put local consultants on local projects

I worked at Teradata full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent base pay bonus money if the sales group makes their numbers and the solution architect snags most of the professional services hours

    Cons

Highly political. Solutions architects compete against each other to get chosen by Account Executives in presale situations. They want to monopolize the professional services hours for themselves.Turf wars over the best accounts and account executives. Managers play favorites based on drinking buddy status instead of skill and productivity.

    Advice to Management

Checkout what you are hearing in this highly politicized environment.

I worked at Teradata full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good technical staff. Great technical resources for learning the firm's software products. Senior management tries to align staff around common messages and goals. Work/life balance is generally decent.

    Cons

Their technology is good, but expensive and highly specialized - there isn't much worth to learning it unless you expect to stay a long time, and given that Hadoop is eating Teradata's lunch Teradata may not have a lot of time left. The sales teams rule the roost - a lucky salesperson that lands one good deal is given license by management to treat tech consultants like dirt.

    Advice to Management

Sell out to Microsoft or Oracle while you can - your company's technology is aging, and your corporate culture is a throwback to the worst of 1970's sexism/ageism.

    Pros

Teradata field sales management has always valued its individual contributors, and tries to accommodate their personal needs. Teradata technology works as advertised, making it easy to represent with integrity.

    Cons

1.2015 layoffs appear to be based on personnel cost considerations, without regard for contribution of individuals to sales successes.
    2. Presale Solution Architects (really sales engineers) are expected to also spend a portion of their time delivering on billable Professional Services projects.
    3. Senior management tends toward micromanagement, with many internal review meetings held too often.

    Advice to Management

Eliminate the Solution Architect job title, change it to Sales Engineer.
Pay attention to marketplace best practices and peer groups for sales and sales engineer compensation.
Bonuses and stock options are not only for executives and managers.

I worked at Teradata full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Firstly, your peers in the 'trenches' are really fantastic people. For the most part they are highly intelligent, really generous with their time, and all around wonderful people.

Other good reasons to work here:
    Free coffee
    Free soda
    Free snacks
    Bathrooms
    Clean office environment
    Professional
    Good 401k
    Good legal plan benefits
    Employee Stock Purchase Program

    Cons

Poor pay and poor bonus (Annual Incentive Plan for non PS, is 7.5%)
Poor expectation management from managers, poor at setting goals
Get it done or get out attitude
Culture of accountability translates to culture of finger pointing
Poor business process and almost no implementation of CMMI whatsoever
Antiquated ideologies about research and development, good senior management, terrible middle management
Antiquated products with bloated features and poor architecture
Management has severe tunnel vision, most development managers have little experience actually developing, employees are rated subjectively
Fiefdom culture, every senior leader has their own little castle which they run their own way, 'fights' happen, lots of political overhead.
Promotions are non existent, yearly raises are consistently 2%, I'm pretty sure that when you account for average inflation, that means you're making less than you did the year before.

    Advice to Management

Hire a business process consultant that will do more than generate a report of how poor you're doing. The majority of your workforce is old and is extremely set in their ways, you're a slow moving dinosaur, the people leaving are the ones with new ideas, talent is walking out your door.

Promote from within, grow your employees and listen to their feedback, pay them better, give them a performance based bonus instead of tying your bonus to company wide goals that they have no influence on.

Get rid of your middle management, ask any lay employee and they will all tell you that the majority of middle management is worthless at this company. Don't promote self management if you're not going to give your employees vertical latitude.

I have been working at Teradata full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay is good; (Most) people are bright; best data warehousing product in the market; If you are a solid worker and have a management chain that appreciates your work, you will be recognized.

    Cons

Internal systems are antiquated and do not work with each other; lingering NCR mentality; No real opportunity for advancement; Company is very margin addicted; Medical benefits choices and options are limited and expensive.

    Advice to Management

Time to shake up the upper management chain with some new blood; Consider a yearly employee wide survey to "take the pulse" of the workers -- include all aspects of work at Teradata: Management Chain, benefits, work/life balance, etc.
