I worked at Teradyne full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You get to work on new semiconductor products years before they arrive in embedded into consumer electronics devices. Its fascinating to see products on the shelf at stores that you had a part in bringing to market. The company is relatively well organized with clear chain of hierarchy and communications with management.

    Cons

Customers do not receive enough training to work independently from a Teradyne applications engineer for at least the first year. This causes for too much support necessary by applications engineers and can't focus on new customers while trying to balance old customers at the same time. Sales will promise anything to customers and promise custom features which puts burden on the engineering teams to deliver unrealistic timelines especially to vip customers. VIP customers will ignore training principles and expect applications engineers to reside on campus for years to fix the issues that they have created themselves.

    Advice to Management

Spend more time training customers and new applications engineers.
Don't allow customers to abuse the support system of applications engineers.
Block customers from having access to source code to create their own changes, this will minimize lots of support issues.

I worked at Teradyne full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

As a big organization the benefits were very good. Health, dental, life, 401k all were at the good level of service and value.
As a big organization there are many levels of management, highly defined job responsibilities and chances for promotion

    Cons

As a big organization there are many levels of management and fixed role responsibilities.
For me this was a recipe for stagnation and not growth. I could not explore new areas to work or contribute to teams under different management tiers without many, many approvals

    Advice to Management

Cut down the levels of management. Cut down the numbers of administrative tasks all employees are required to handle daily, weekly, monthly.
Allow easy cross team co operation and integrations

I worked at Teradyne full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Technology is exceptional. Good product mix. Outstanding field service support. Outstanding engineering.

    Cons

Company processes designed for a company of 8000 people, but it has downsized to less than 3000. Has significant market share but really needs to continue to grow this market share to maintain company value. Applications support is mediocre and expensive via the GSO group.

    Advice to Management

Restructure GSO so that it's more tied in with the Sales process of selling systems.

    Pros

Lots of great people to work with. Very flexible environment. Very low stress

    Cons

Sunset industry with lots of consolidation/ merging happened during the last several years, There were used be 7 public companies, now only 3 companies. many managers who have been in test equipment business over 20 years have nowhere to go, but to kiss his boss to hang in there

    Advice to Management

treat your supervises better although they are stuck in this industry

    Pros

Teradyne values its employees and provides opportunities for growth no matter what level in the organization you occupy. Management values each employee's contributions.

    Cons

Like many companies in the semiconductor industry, business is cyclical and brings stress during the downturns. Business is worldwide, so working in the US means dealing with sites around the world on urgent issues, which can place excessive demands on employees' time.

    Advice to Management

Try to minimize stress of cyclical business.

    Pros

Good pay and benefits when the company was doing well financially. An excellent team of engineers. If you're lucky to have a manager with good communication skills and knowledge, it can be helpful to your success.

    Cons

With all the cutbacks Teradyne has lost a lot of talented and experienced engineers. Career growth opportunities are limited in some of the field offices.

    Advice to Management

Some managers are lacking in good leadership and people skills. They should not only receive management training but also anonymous feedback from their employees.

    Pros

As a fresh grad, Teradyne was a very good place to work. Good projects that really gives you some confidence. You could try different areas, if you are so inclined.

    Cons

it is a very claustrophobic industry, in general.
re. Teradyne, there was some high level office politics, but iddnt really affect the employees that much.

    Advice to Management

    None.
