I have been working at Texas Biomedical Research full-time

    Pros

Very varied work day. Phlebotomy, urgent care, surgical support, radiology, BSL3, husbandry.

    Cons

A multitude of buildings means you are outside a LOT. Prepare to sweat.

I worked at Texas Biomedical Research full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

TxBiomed has 3 departments, Virology & Immunology, Genetics, and the Primate Center. The research that makes this institution attractive happens within V&I and Genetics, where there are some brilliant and talented investigators.

    Cons

The Primate Center on the other hand is a poorly run breeding colony, where animals are regularly mistreated and neglected. Management staff is removed from the day-to-day, and unfortunately does not act within the best interest of the animals. Many of the employees of the primate center are not formally educated, and lack critical thinking and problem solving skills- when an issue arises, the answer is much more.....dystopian.m

    Advice to Management

Refresh the management staff with individuals who are there for the best interest of the animals, and can put that mentality into practice.

    Pros

The scientific research is high caliber.

    Cons

There is little opportunity for upward mobility from postdoctoral positions unless you are favored. Frequent changes in organizational hierarchy and senior staff in the past few years have left lower-level staff uncertain of their futures. Uncertainty does generally favor a positive environment. As in many institutions, there is a deep divide between administration and science personnel. The animal facilities are
