Benefits>Pay
Dec 12, 2021 - Insurance Specialist II in Austin, TXRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Generous sick, vacation, comp time.
Cons
There are no cost of living wage increases, salary is set by state legislators so receiving a raise is rare and can not be expected yearly. Not a lot of options for remote work.

Pros
State benefits, assisting consumers, state holidays
Cons
Salary, little room for growth, need more professional development programs, management often promotes people who are not qualified for their positions often creating a hostile work environment.

Financial Analyst - I
Dec 7, 2021 - Financial Analyst in Austin, TXRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great benefits, amazing schedule and flexibility. Very friendly staff and a lot of knowledgeable staff members to learn from.
Cons
It’s a state job, salary typically is lower than other employers. They compensate salary for benefits. If you want a higher salary, then you’ller salary, then you’ller salary, then you’ll have to jump to another position or another agency.

Pros
Culture is pretty good there.
Cons
They have really poor salaries.

Great place to serve the public
Aug 19, 2016 - Anonymous Employee in Austin, TXRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
A good employer with many diverse jobs. People with initiative move up in the organization.
Cons
State salary but benefits make up for it.

Pros
Positive work environment, great people to work with, they offer free training to employees who wish to gain more experience, and they promote from within the agency.
Cons
Salaries are on the low side for the time commitments, management is pretty flexible, and approachable with dates for requesting vacation, and the salary increases seem to be slightly above the inflation rate for staff that stays in their current position year after year.

One of the worst jobs I have ever had
Mar 7, 2022 - Attorney in Austin, TXRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Free health insurance is available, and time off is ok, you get off state holidays.
Cons
Very high turnover- 43% in one department. Legal has very high turnover rate with constant vacancies. Legal department is poorly run with lots of yelling and accusations. You will not be treated as an adult professional. Lot of fragile egos in management and managers who are emotionally volatile under stress. Do not work here-the salary is low compared to other state agencies and the toxicity is too high. If you are fat, legal probably won't hire you anyway.

Pros
Good work balance, flexible, great management
Cons
Low salary, small promotion hike
