      Pros

Stable job with great benefits and overall good environment. Hard working individuals that are very smart and passionate. Excellent work-life balance with low stress but meaningful work. Help make a difference in the lives of Texans.

      Cons

Low pay with no annual bonus. Have to re-apply to higher positions to be "promoted" or increase pay. Patience is key as things move slow in government work.

Good for gaining experience, work history; horrible pay for having to wear so many hats

      Pros

Lucky for me I got a great boss and amazing team! I work with some of the smartest, caring, hard-working, lovable people on the planet. Upper management in my area is considerate and fair. Great healthcare benefits, paid vacations (federal and state holidays + bonus time off). Because they are broke and short-staffed, we get all sorts of experience doing all manner of jobs across the board.

      Cons

Very low pay for the amount of work. Not much incentive to stay since you can't really move up or get raises for the amount of work you do that is always increasing. Too much red-tape bureaucracy in the parent HHSC creates problems for the DSHS. Exhausting job for peanuts.

      Run away!

      Pros

Benefits paid by state for employee is a plus.

      Cons

No advancement opportunity or pay increases. Training is a joke, what you learn in training is not what you encounter afterwards. Dont miss work, get sick or be late for 6 months while training. It is frowned upon big time. You are reminded daily that you can be replaced. You are expected to work a certain amount of cases in a certain time frame each and every day, and if you dont meet that you are reminded again you can be replaced, Staff is expected to work alot of mandatory overtime as straight pay. They take a percentage of money out before you are paid for retirement that is mandatory. Pay is low, but just above not being able to get assistance yourself. You are paid monthly, and taxed monthly. Expect @ 1700 a month take home to start in most cases.

      Pros

Texas Department of State Health Services is a really nice place to work. There were always helpful people around. Work hours were nice. No overtime work.

      Cons

People around you may leave for all kinds of reasons. Changing environment. Low pay. Inefficient technology support. Too slow to set up all the facilities for a new employee.
