I worked at Textron full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great co-workers, a lot of 30+ year folks. Great benefits, located in nice area.

    Cons

Too many chiefs, not enough Indians. Executive level not steering the ship very well, put way too much time and money into a single project, didn't see the bigger picture. Sold all land that company used to own locally...zero room to grow, can't even find parking. Lay-offs poorly executed (embarrassingly had to recall people that it laid off).

    Advice to Management

See Cons above. Place needs a visionary or its going to run out of steam very soon. No forward thinkers anymore, execs come in...make crazy changes, pull golden parachute and leave. hahaha

    Pros

Company did not bother satellite locations, and tried to work with employees to share expertise through out the firm.

    Cons

Unprepared when taking over new intelligence based contract. Depended upon work force from previous firms contract transitioning over to continue working under Textron. Made offers to new employees but with significant pay cuts, reduced benefits such as leave and sick time. Annual increases minimal, and did not get back to my pre pay cut salary by the time I retired after Textron lost the two year contract. Biggest insult was Textron manipulating retirement plan, putting retirees at risk by forcing a total liquidation of all 401k assets and transferring to an IRA in order to begin taking distributions. Even stocks held in Brokerage account must be sold and transferred to IRA, creating potential for significant loss when buying back into the same stocks. I would not recommend this firm if you have any concerns for how you will control your retirement assets after leaving.

    Advice to Management

Leave retirement assets alone after an employee leaves Textron. Your controls should be abrogated after separation from the firm, and allow ex employees to manage their own retirement assets.

I worked at Textron (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good environment fir interns and recent graduates

    Cons

High turnover, especially of mature employees

    Advice to Management

Value the mature employees. The loss of tribal knowledge is unfortunate and leads to repetitive mistakes.

    Pros

Get to work with SAP, and interact with many parts of the manufacturing business- receiving, quality, warehousing, line schedulers, sourcing, etc. Textron is a good company, in this position you have some opportunities to travel to suppliers and get engaged in process improvement projects.

    Cons

The job by nature can be very stressful, you are expected to put in a lot of hours without compensation (since this is a salary position, they don't pay for overtime). A lot of times a week can turn into 60hr week, so be prepared to either sacrifice sleep or your social life.

    Advice to Management

Locking down scheduled for at least a month or two would help tremendously with reducing inventory and line interruptions.

I have been working at Textron full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Textron is a massive company with many different business units you can transfer to get a better overall experience. There is always so much going on, and so much to do. I really enjoy my job.

    Cons

Sometimes I would rather just focus on one project instead of four, but that is the nature of my position.

    Advice to Management

The management does an excellent job most of the time with their direct reports, sometimes I feel a tug of war between other managers that need me to help them with various tasks and projects.
