    Pros

Thacher was a great place to work. The people were about as friendly as it gets for a large law firm in manhattan. They were more laid back than your typical lawyers. Alot of folks were very close, many strong friendships were formed at the firm and it showed. The lawyers who worked there were also very knowledgeable about their practice areas.

    Cons

The firm took major risks in not diversifying practice areas beyond structured finance and realestate. As a result, the firm was not able to withstand the economic downturn, despite having been around for 150 years and surviving sep 11.

    Advice to Management

    diversify better

    Pros

Work environment and access to great structured finance work. The people here are very outgoing and generally get along with each other. There are ample official and unofficial opportunities to socialize with other associates and partners. The clients of the firm are top notch, particularly in the structured finance department. The office decor is also top notch.

    Cons

The current structured finance environment has made Thacher not the place to be if you are looking for job security. The firm is currently experiencing a contraction of its work force, this has lead to many voluntary defections as well of key partners. Two years from now I am sure that Thacher's business will be booming again, but at what expense? Will the quality of the new associates be the same as it was prior to the market collapse.

    Advice to Management

Broaden practice focus from real estate.

    Pros

Tried to keep up with the Jones.

    Cons

Management was horrible. No vision. Bad strategy. Went from friendly to sweatshop.

    Advice to Management

Good luck. You'll need it as you aren't very good.
