I worked at Thales as a contractor

    Pros

Great team and very hands on and approachable line manager (Francesco Da Re). The team I worked in was part of the Jubilee Line Signalling Upgrade and I really enjoyed being involved in such a huge project. If I hadn't been pregnant, I wouldn't have left!!

    Cons

Thames is a huge international company, so you are a small dog in a huge wheel. Due to the nature of the project, many staff are contractors, therefore there is no long term job security!

    Advice to Management

    None

I have been working at Thales full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good salary and benefits, when compared to rest of UK. Good for CV to work on world class rail projects. Working with customer can be tough.

    Cons

Struggling with a lot if projects, which is good problem, but leaves resources stretched. Need to improve management structure, too silted.

    Advice to Management

Look to focus on priority areas

I worked at Thales full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Thales is a large organisation with a wide range of products and services. There is scope for international travel both for short term project related work, and for longer term overseas postings. The technology is usually cutting edge and there a lot of very experienced and high quality people within the business.

    Cons

Under performance is not dealt with quickly or effectively compared to other similar business', with the result that there is a lot of dead wood within the business, causing others to overwork to take up the slack. Very conservative in their approach to risk.

    Advice to Management

    Tryst your people more.

I worked at Thales full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people, good technology. Benefitted from French investment. Excellent opportunities within the Thales companies for those prepared to relocate. Business language is English but helps to have some knowledge of French language for socialising and integrating with international colleagues.

    Cons

Centralised management somewhat heavy handed. Bound up in processes. French ownership hinders in some export areas for UK businesses.

    Advice to Management

Identify the excellent people that work for the company and treat them well. Become more agile and flexible in capability and product offers. Improve delivery performance

I have been working at Thales full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Remote 1st Line site :-Good alround IT ,Mechanical ,Hydraulics, training and simulation PFI site.
If you enjoy being on the beck ,call and fast reaction to recovery of a sim then you will enjoy .
Each fault can be quite testing at times to a newcomer .Manning levels are tight so you must know what your doing as you may be working on your own a lot of the time and be answerable to the managers who count the beans on site.so can be stressful.

    Cons

The simulator is getting long in the tooth to keep serviceable and being a PFI site,it is a strain on the engineers on the ground to keep it serviceable.Getting engineers of suitable caliber are now near enough an extinct species.Money is very tight,Promotion is via dead persons shoes on the site.
Secondary jobs usully involve pat testing,Coshh ,health & safety ,building maintenance which includes plant room minor repairs i.e belts ,motors and montioring chillers so Jack of all trades

    Advice to Management

Improve Management, less paper work. this place where I am has only at best another 2-3 years operation as spares are becoming harder to obtain due to age of simulator and cost. Engineers are looking else where or retiring !

I worked at Thales full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great salary, benefits and work life balance. Ability to manage workload and a decent amount of autonomy. Enjoyed working with the businesses I supported and formed great working relationships

    Cons

The HR model needs work as at an operational level it does not support the business need.

Managers do not have the level of skill, confidence in their abilities or had access to the training and development necessary to effectively manage their staff.

Common feedback from managers is 'there is no HR' which is a difficult situation to work with when there feels like you have no support behind you from the 'Central Function'.

    Advice to Management

    Sort the HR model out
Ensure the necessary level of operational HR support is in place
    Up skill your management community
Put the 'H' back into HR!!
