I have been working at Thames Water full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A great team of people throughout the business, hard work is often rewarded, and the management are always on hand to support you in any matter.

    Cons

Not enough staff to achieve what they want to, and the staff that are there are are pushed to deliver.

    Advice to Management

Employ more staff, focus on what you want to achieve and stick to the same plan and see it through.

I have been working at Thames Water full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Big company, loads of responsibility early on. Thrown into it all. Great to be part of a company on the up. Keeping tap water tasty and safe. Love being able to say I'm part of that.

    Cons

Massive companies take time to change. There's also a lot of layers of management which can dilute messages from the top down or bottom up.

    Advice to Management

Get out of the office and into the field as often as possible.

    Pros

Incredibly supportive to staff, they actively encourage everyone to second in to other departments to get a better understanding of the business as well as work on their career goals.

There are a lot of training opportunities and CPD for anyone with professional qualifications.

Social company, they do regular time out for tea in order to ensure staff recognise the need to get away from work for a small break during the day while allowing everyone to get together and chat.

    Cons

Canteen food is lacking but at least there is one. Under a certain level, benefits are minimal but as soon as you get to management level the bonuses and car allowance are automatic and high, leaves anyone under that level feeling a bit under appreciated

    Advice to Management

Share out the bonuses, just a little less to management staff would create a pot for L6 and L7+

    Find another caterer!

I worked at Thames Water as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

It paid very nicely, HR dealt with a sexual harassment complaint very well and very quickly, good food and fair prices for lunch, constructive feedback from management and regular reviews. Also I could leave my work at work and go home happy!

    Cons

The IT system was 10 years behind, hot desks are not fun, a few bad managers with big egos I had to deal with

    Advice to Management

Give everyone their own desk, upgrade your IT systems and get more feedback from employees.

I have been working at Thames Water full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Family working environment where relationships with colleagues are as important as outputs.
The business is focused on empowering it's staff to do the right thing by making decisions now and asking for forgiveness later.
Ample opportunity to learn and grow along with gain support from colleagues.
Dedication to H&S is very apparent and fully supported.

    Cons

There isn't a strong enough focus on process compliance. Therefore making changes stick is very challenging in the working environment.

    Advice to Management

A focus on some of the more boring day to day work such as process compliance may bring significant changes across the board if the culture is embraced at group level.
