I worked at The Adirondack Trust part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Steady hours
Competitive 401k and stock option to all employees

    Cons

All levels of employees are underpaid
HIGH turnover (saw my colleagues comes and go constantly)
No matter the department, hostile and combative employees worry about their coworkers vs their own job security.

    Advice to Management

    Pay your employees better.
Hire compassionate leaders in the branches, not robotic, old school corporate/temperamental bosses.
Competitor banks (I worked for a few) offer generous packages and growth potential/assistance.
Teach and orient your employees to help them grow, don't persecute by default.
Invest in technology, your branches need to be updated to the 21st century.

I worked at The Adirondack Trust as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The Adirondack Trust has a high retention rate among full-time employees for a reason; it's just a great place to work. Providing the best banking and investment services in the capital region, the Trust has provided hundreds of individuals with lasting careers.

    Cons

Fairly old workforce with a conservative mindset, particularly in respect to investments. Also, the market in upstate New York, however charming, lacks resources that more populated towns can provide.

    Pros

The company feels much like a family and the position you work in is what you make it. If you treat others well and show interest in and attempt to learn and improve on whatever position you hold, they will treat you well. I highly suggest this company.

    Cons

If you do not like banking or find it uninteresting then it may not be the company for you. Although they have a number of other divisions (like Insurance), if the financial industry in general is not what you are looking for then don't take a position here. If it is, it is one of the best community banks I have ever seen/worked for.

    Pros

    Easy
    Get to know customers
Very community oriented, really there for Saratoga
    Involved in the community
    Friendly staff
    New 401k program

    Cons

Changes happen every week. One day you'll be doing something and the next day that way is wrong and you have to learn a whole new way of doing it.

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees more. Also, create a management trainee program. Someone with a College degree should not be a teller making $9/hr. Make use of the talent you have.

  7. "Nice Place To Work"

    Pros

People are nice to wok with. Staff within the departments are very supportive of each other. Stable employer. Opportunities for advancement exist, you have to be prepared to learn the banking business and be proactive in discussing opportunities.

    Cons

Advancement opportunities require patience, motivation, and preparation due to the long tenure of employees at this bank.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at The Adirondack Trust full-time

    Pros

Stable employment and co-workers are so nice. Depending on the department, managers can be flexible. Great company for those who have been there 20+ years and who are ready to retire.

    Cons

Culture is very rigid and closed-minded with an old-fashioned management style. Fear-based senior management styles coupled with invisible HR department make it difficult to feel like a team. Out of touch with employees. Poor/no internal communications. Pay range in lower percentile. Low morale. Terrible vacation policy.

    Advice to Management

Employees don't feel appreciated. Communications are murky and inconsistent; HR department can set the tone for the organization with quality communications and with better leadership. Implement a talent management program.

    Negative Outlook

    Pros

Stable, will not be let go, can be fun, community support, well respected company, management in certain departments are very flexible and understanding, 8-4:30 always

    Cons

Low Pay (typically in lowest 25% percentile of field) with many employees on need based assistance, old-fashioned thinking, closed minded, no opportunity for advancement, Byzantine raise system (they actually total up the total of the exempt/hourly *albeit separately* and then approve a % raise over that and that's all thats allowed to go around, no matter how hard you may have worked), low morale as of late.

    Advice to Management

Start paying people livable wages especially in some of the non-technical departments and morale may improve a bit the cost of living in this area is very high. Listen to your personnel and not the salesmen when making IT decisions.
