I have been working at The Aerospace Corporation as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The staff are inviting and are willing to help, the intern events help connect interns to each other and to staff, and the projects are very interesting with the option of joining as many as projects as you want.

    Cons

They didn't handle housing, newer software practices we're slowly being adopted.

    Pros

This is a very diverse company that hires engineers and scientists with very different backgrounds. Your working experience is highly dependent on the group you end up working with. Before considering a job here, do a LinkedIn research of the people that you'll be working with.
If you work in the Engineering and Technology Group (ETG), probably 90% or more of the work you do will be collaborating within small groups in your organization, these are called departments. Every department operates differently based on their manager's philosophy and customers, so do some research on who you will be working with and which customers they support. Some groups work at a startup pace, and some work at a DMV pace, as another reviewer mentioned.

Pros : Being a company that operates an FFRDC ( .org) the company doesn't "sell" or manufacture a single product (like most commercial companies do), so you will get exposure to building multiple and very diverse products , projects and other deliverables.
A lot of the work you do has the goal of creating prototypes and products that are not intended for massive commercialization, like a CubeSat. This means you need to do the initial R&D, prototyping , always with a customer (Commercial or Government) in mind , but you don't need to worry about scaling your product to millions of devices.

Prototyping allows you to take risks, which allows you to consider the latest and greatest existing technologies. If you are the type of person that enjoys experimenting with technology this could be the place for you (ETG).

Publishing & patenting your work is encouraged, and with the new leadership, there's a push to let the world know what's going at Aerospace. This is done by contributing more to open-source efforts and by being active participants in the tech world.
If you are an undergrad who is considering graduate studies, the company has programs of tuition reimbursement to facilitate this. Most of the engineers and scientists here have some level of advanced degree.

    Cons

The difference in leadership paradigms within the company does not help. The new CEO has great intentions and ideas, but sometimes they don't trickle down smoothly to the lower level organizations.
You definitely don't learn about the challenges of massive product production. You will be able to create and develop a device that operates like an iPhone, but you won't learn on how to massively produce it and to make the device fit into your pocket or how to prevent the battery from exploding like in the the Galaxy S7.

    Advice to Management

The new CEO came in with an open mind and a will to challenge existing methods and practices of every day things in the company. Not everyone below him works in the same way. There's still a lot of red tape that makes some processes really slow and frustrating.
Reward employees based on performance and productivity, not so much on levels of grey hair.
Learn lessons from successful silicon valley companies, not from government contractors.

I worked at The Aerospace Corporation full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

1% raises keep you in current tax bracket.

    Cons

This job will pigeon hole you to defense contractors and beltway bandits. Low pay, poor benefits, little to low advancement, Nepotism is rampant, managers are fearful of HR, employees are fearful of being laid off. Back stabbing leaves blood everywhere.

    Advice to Management

Cut management by two thirds and save the government some money. All management does is roll up status reports that employees spend one whole day writing on their weekly activity reports. 12 bullets become 3, then become 1 and then non.

    Pros

You will never be fired if you even do a little work.

    Cons

Everyone hoards work and data. Nobody talks or shares. Managers have technical work of their own and can't manage. To many projects with very few hours.

    Advice to Management

Reduce the size of ETG and move it into customer facing offices.

I have been working at The Aerospace Corporation full-time

    Pros

Access to knowledge built over time and cooperatively with customers.
Flexible schedules and time off/ sick leave if needed, at some point everyone needs to care for a family member.

    Cons

Time off policies are warped: increases occur too soon, while returning staff are eligible for old 5-week maximum. This is expensive.
Mid-career employees do most of the work, while less experienced staff are celebrated for their energy and present an outside image that is superficial.

    Advice to Management

Only offer signing bonus, not higher salaries to new staff- their experience is unproven. Buyout/demote level 4s with no direct reports or mentees.
Offer real raises mid-career, as an incentive to stay, many have left or relocated just to afford housing.
Flatten organizations and communicate across that combined level. Bring in more external leaders, for functions like CIO.
Don't associate a building with the value of a person's customer support.
Increase vacation after 9 years, like Mitre.

    Cons

Pay is below industry standards. Way below.
