I have been working at The Aerospace Corporation full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Interesting programs to work on and a very reasonable work/life balance at work.

    Cons

The work environment is politically charged and this non-profit company is going the route of large for profit corporations (minimal raises, using lump sums instead of raises, hiring younger cheaper professionals). This company does technical oversight of large defense contracts in complex problem domains. For decades the average aged employee was over 50, most of these folks were very knowledgeable as they had already completed a career in the military or building complex systems for one or more of the many defense contractors in the US. This is all changing now ... how can a collage grad with no applicable experience step into a position to perform project management and over site of systems engineering and development being done by talented and experienced engineers?

    Advice to Management

Upper management, you always say "our people is what makes us strong" yet as one of your people, I don't feel valued. You tend to manage programs and budgets but not people. Focus more on the advancement, goals, and aspirations of your employees.

I have been working at The Aerospace Corporation (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    * Stable environment if you are part of a program office.
    * Most people work reasonable hours.
    * Since it is an FFRDC there is less stress than in a competitive contracting environment.
    * Employees are free to move from one position to the next
    * Aerospace encourages employees to work for different offices during their career
    * Interesting projects.

    Cons

    * Lack of upward mobility
    * Salary based off of age more than merit within a salary group
    * Upper management lacks strategy of expanding customer base.
    * Management is unorganized in their approach with planning and functioning across Aerospace teams.

    Advice to Management

Aerospace needs to do a better job in how they choose their management. Many managers at the lower levels lack the organizational skills to be effective in meeting customer needs for research projects. Upper management lacks skills in strategy to expand the customer base. I would say in general Aerospace has a good workforce, just below average management.

    Pros

    Collaboration between divisions is limited.

    Pros

Interesting work, very smart colleagues, company has a unique role within the Aerospace industry, work-life balance is excellent.

    Cons

As everyone else says, salary/raises are poor, (although benefits are good), and there is very limited opportunity for upward mobility.

I have been working at The Aerospace Corporation full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Easy job, just going to meetings all day long, no pressure
The metric for the govt customer is number of MTS "units (hours)" which can be met by any warm body

    Cons

For this taxpayer funded nonprofit, CEO makes over $9 million/year and the VPs $2 million a year. Meanwhile, the working staff have experienced a number of no pay increase years.
Not good for a young person that wants to create something new or build something other than Powerpoint slides

    Advice to Management

Make executive salaries at Aerospace consistent with salaries at MITRE, RAND, and for-profit companies

I have been working at The Aerospace Corporation full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The staff here are talented, the pay is ok, and it is relatively stable for the industry. The work can be interesting and the customers are very appreciative.

    Cons

Limited upward mobility past a point. Managers hang on until they die -- literally. Silly attempts to modernize, re-brand, and reorganize.

    Advice to Management

"Term limits" for managers. Lateral them to staff positions after 8 years.
