I worked at The Alexander Group (AZ) (More than a year)

    Pros

    Less travel than many firms.

    Cons

While occasionally interesting work like diagramming a buyers' journey project happens, most of the projects are focused on compensation design models. While AGI has a strong model, from a consultant's perspective, it's very repetitive work. Also don't expect training of any kind outside of training on the compensation design model. Not a place to go to build business acumen or additional skills. When people are coached out, it's without warning of where their deficiencies may lie.

    Pros

The people at AGI are generally fantastic - extremely smart, driven, and client-focused. Firm has great depth of knowledge in sales. Projects can be very interesting and strategic.

    Cons

Leadership at office level is generally good, but is not enabled by executive leadership. Principals and Directors are overstretched and not directly incentivized to develop people. Projects are not scoped well, stretching efforts/bandwidth at all levels (usually an analyst, Assoc Cons/Cons., and at times Manager). Firm is unable is scale because it loses top talent due to burn out and disillusion. Unfortunate that top leadership (above office leadership) appears oblivious they inhibit firm growth and won't let better leaders drive growth. Defensiveness on glass door reviews reflect lack of awareness and resistance to actual firm improvement

    Advice to Management

Get out of your own way. Leverage your assets (the people) you have better. Own up to opportunity areas and actually improve instead of covering up (i.e. Attempting to undermine constructive reviews on glass door)

I have been working at The Alexander Group (AZ) full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Having worked at other consulting firms as well as a variety of industry leaders I can say without a doubt this is the best of all worlds. The fast-paced environment is extremely collaborative and thought provoking which yields forward thinking and out of the box solutions. While AGI is firmly positioned as the thought leader and expert in revenue management consulting, the marketplace is relatively immature, which leads to numerous opportunities to build your own brand within the company and market.

The travel is generally governed by client meetings and needs. You don’t have the "optics" travel of unnecessarily being on the road 5 days a week that I have experienced in the past. Travel exists but it is much more client focused and purpose driven.

    Cons

As with most consulting firms you must be open to stop on a dime and pivot. No project is the same so if you are looking to implement standard frameworks then AGI is not for you. The structured ambiguity works great for lots of people but is not for everyone. While long workdays are common, they are not the normal as I have seen at other firms.

    Advice to Management

    Continue to build technology solutions.

I have been working at The Alexander Group (AZ) full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I have worked at several consulting firms throughout my career and the Alexander Group (AGI) is simply the best. AGI consistently enables its people to make a difference, enhance skills and become successful.

Opportunities to make a difference are consistently available. Client engagements are regularly initiated with C-Level executives and the client roster is the” who’s who” of companies. In project work you will find yourself sharing key insights and creative strategies that drive growth with senior leaders.

If you are someone who is looking to develop your skills AGI offers a wide variety of client challenges, projects and industries. Furthermore, everyone is encouraged to be intellectually curious and develop skills and knowledge by conducting research projects, creating new intellectual property and finding their passion.

Finally, AGI is dedicated to making you successful. While offering great compensation and advancement opportunities, what sets the organization apart is their engaging leadership team. The leadership proactively seeks out feedback from everyone in the organization and makes a point to engage each employee face to face to understand how work and life is progressing. This consistent collection of feedback is leveraged to change processes, projects and technology to enable success.

    Cons

While working at AGI is a rewarding experience there are a few drawbacks. As in any consulting job clients can make life wonderful or awful. Getting a client that is unrealistic, difficult or just abusive doesn’t happen often but certainly can from time to time. The organization does a great job of limiting exposure to bad clients.

The hours can also vary greatly based on client load and time of year. Of course any experienced consultant would tell that is part of being in the consulting business.

    Advice to Management

Continue to embrace technology investment to speed up business processes and invest in people.

I have been working at The Alexander Group (AZ) full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great professional growth opportunities and ability to get involved in all aspects of the firm's business:
    (1) contributing to firm IP through blogs, whitepapers, speeches, conferences and viewpoint briefings,
    (2) leading a wide range of projects in size and scope within the sales effectiveness spectrum both domestically and internationally
    (3) interacting with C-suite leaders to solve their pressing issues
    (4) developing junior resources

    Cons

Like all management consulting jobs, the hours can be long at times and the client travel can pile up at times.

    Advice to Management

Continue focus on sustainable growth through expanding the breadth and depth of our services and adding quality talent. Don't lose the 'feel' of a smaller consulting firm as we grow.

I have been working at The Alexander Group (AZ) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    * Plenty of immediate exposure to clients and senior leaders within the firm
    * Nice people to work with at the office -- definitely no a-holes; very smart, fun team
    * High standards that drive excellence -- there is a passion here to truly engage with clients and solve problems, not just "create the deck"
    * Not as much travel as some other firms, so there can be more schedule flexibility
    * Have already had the opportunity to generate and contribute to IP development, blog posts, etc.

    Cons

    * Management consulting in general is a lot of work, not for the faint of heart - AGI is no exception. Not sure this is really a con for AGI, but would want everyone to understand this about management consulting in general
    * You are on projects either FT or half time, so gaining experience may take longer, depending on your goals; up to the staff to make their project preferences known and manage their own development (as much as it is to their manager)

    Advice to Management

    * Continue to invest in internal IT systems and productivity enablers; we should be leading the pack here on trying out new tools, such as project management, analytics, visual design, and expense tools
    * Continue to invest in our training and professional development; would be great to embed learning plans into our development conversations so we can contribute value to the firm at an even faster pace

I have been working at The Alexander Group (AZ) full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

+ Work is interesting if you like sales strategy / sales comp
+ You get plenty of exposure to work directly with client, shape and present the deliverable, manage associates, etc
+ Most folks work out of the San Francisco office so there's good office culture
+ Travel is minimal leading to better work life balance; hours are reasonable for management consulting

    Cons

    - Work does get monotonous at times and having more associates to leverage would help
    - While base pay is not competitive to other firms, you are eligible for high bonus if you perform well
    - Benefits definitely needs improvement.

I have been working at The Alexander Group (AZ) full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

For a consulting firm, the environment is open and entrepreneurial, yet still supportive. Nobody will ever stop you from doing something "above your pay grade". At the same time people are always willing to help if you ask. The flexibility of the small office environment is also nice for work-life balance despite high work ethic standards. There's also less hierarchy and red tape than you'd find at a larger firm.

Work content is usually interesting and the typically shorter duration of projects (2 - 6 months) means you get to see new issues/industries/geographies all the time. I've seen plenty of Fortune 500 companies while working here as well.

The people are also great. It's a fun, tight-knit group if you like to have a little fun while you go about your work. Social outings as an office are a common, play in rec leagues together, etc.

    Cons

Not sure it's really a con, but you do need to take initiative for your own career if you're here. People will always help, but you need to be willing to take risks and ask for growth opportunities to move up quickly and make an impression.

The travel can be a bit spotty. Sometimes you don't travel for a month or two at a time. Then you can be on the road 4 days a week for a few weeks. It's all project dependent so just makes work-life balance tough sometimes.

    Advice to Management

Keep building a good new hire / development support structure without losing the small office feel / flexibility.
