Proven Tools to help small business owners. 25 year of experience

    Cons

I have been working at The Alternative Board (More than a year)

    Pros

Support of the entire community, support office team, executives, are the best I have come across after many years of working with great companies. The business which devotes its time and energy supporting small business owners is such important and worthy work and it's done so well with great attention. Great training, great tools to work with, some great new senior execs as well as long standing experienced heads.

    Cons

Small business owners do everything and similarly you need to be fast paced, flexible, willing to learn and take on loads. You would want to have the passion and energy to keep with the pace.

    Advice to Management

Keep the current team Best yet.

I worked at The Alternative Board full-time

    Pros

The franchisees are, for the most part, good people, and tend to treat the employees fairly most of the time.

    Cons

The owner and the CEO do not see eye to eye, which creates a culture of confusion for employees. Many times, they will give conflicting direction to employees, and then the employee pays the price from one or the other when they have to choose which orders to follow.
Every issue that the company has stems from the owner and senior management, but all problems are blamed on the employees, who are not allowed to make decisions or effect positive change.
Some of the franchisees are unqualified, and they aren't making enough money and validate poorly.
The pay and benefits are far below the market standard; very far below.

    Advice to Management

Let your management team actually manage, and do not micro-manage them.
Hire better, more qualified employees through meeting the industry standard pay levels.
Sell franchises to qualified individuals only.

    Pros

Great support. Good Marketing Call Center. Legal is very strong.

    Cons

Limited flexibility in creating client programs. Many similar solutions exist, so differentiation is difficult for potential clients to see clearly.

Very open to ideas from all levels of employees and franchisees.
Caring, understanding ownership who are family friendly.
    Promotes from within.

    Cons

Very fast paced, so not a workplace for those looking to go slow. You'll need to be energetic, but the payoff is great.

    Pros

Rewarding work that benefits others; franchisees and business owners. Fast paced with variety of opportunities to take on new challenges. Family-owned company that cares about employees and franchisees, not just the bottom line.

    Cons

Some employees here when I started that weren't a good culture fit, but things are much better for the last 2 years.

    Advice to Management

Keep brining in good peple and top franchisees.

"Small, Family Owned Company Who Doesn't Value Employees"

I worked at The Alternative Board full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Casual dress code was allowed in the office.

    Cons

Work/life balance was terrible. If you put in a 10 hour day it just wasn't enough. Upper management would tell you to do one thing and once completed say that's not what they asked for. Constructive criticism wasn't provided, everything was always your fault no matter what lengths you took in order to ensure success. Constant turnover in staff, espeically upper level management so nothing was ever the same. It's a family owned business and it's very evident the family is only looking out for themselves and doesn't really care about their employees. Double standards all across the board with employees; if you were friends or sucked up with the owner/founder you got all the benefits.

    Advice to Management

Take the time to look and see how you treat employees and practice what you preach.
