    Negative Outlook

I worked at The Archdiocese of Baltimore part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Great people to work with
    Beautiful work setting

    Cons

Music is traditionally undervalued monetarily in the Catholic Church - it expects a high level of commitment and competency but does not pay a living wage

    Advice to Management

Value your musicians - the music is one of the 3 main reasons people are attracted to the Liturgy. Please don't take their talent and contributions for granted.

I worked at The Archdiocese of Baltimore (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Opportunity for growth. The development department tended to promote from within before hiring outside of the organization...

    Cons

...which led to people being shifted around to positions they weren't qualified for since it was easier than waiting to hire a qualified replacement. Also, HR was not helpful in basically any situation.

    Advice to Management

Implement performance reviews to see who your good employees are vs. those that shouldn't be there anymore.

    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

The staff supporting men and women in leadership roles were excellent. They worked with limited resources to provide the best possible education.

    Cons

The creation of a school system rather than a federation of schools made the schools no different from the public schools and therefore irrelevant. School leadership on a local level was reactionary because diocese leadership was inconsistent and very difficult to predict. This created a very stressful and demoralizing working environment. The threat of losing your job every few months does not create innovative and good schools.

    Advice to Management

Make a plan, like the school rating plan, and stick to it. Do not force schools and organizations to jump though a myriad of hoops and then change the plan mid-course without explaining why. It is understandable that plans need to change, however expecting schools to do this without an understanding of why the countless hours of extra unpaid work are needed creates bitterness and frustration.

I have been working at The Archdiocese of Baltimore full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Many off days for observation of Catholic holidays. Company wide picnic in the summer, trips to Orioles Games, annual employee Appreciation Week that includes cruise around Baltimore Harbor and crabs, Archbishop host a wonderful Christmas party and usually gives us the time off between Christmas and the new year. Everyone is embracing and most people are willing to help and answer questions for new hires. The building is closed on Fridays during the summer, so you work four 10h days M-Th

    Cons

Can be a bit of a boys club at the top. If the four 10 hours days don't appeal to you, there is not much wiggle room. Most people have been here for years, so there isn't much room for advancement or promotion

    Advice to Management

create more incentives for people to work harder
