    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at The Benson Hotel full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Union hotel so pay and benefits are better than average, nice comradery among union employees

    Cons

While they say that they are committed to developing their employees they consistently hire managers from outside the hotel rather than promoting from within. They always use the excuse that the external candidate has more experience but at a certain point you are either committed to developing your own existing employees or you pigeon hole them into inescapable roles. While there are some good people that work here the top management has their priorities wrong.

    Advice to Management

    Promote from within.

  2. "Nice people, old and sad environment. The Titanic hotel really is sinking fast."

    Pros

Employees are generally nice and kind. Mediocre work from non-management is accepted and is the "norm" so if you don't like to work hard you don't have to. Some employees work really hard but these are few and far between.

    Cons

The Benson has SO many issues. First of all, it is stuck in 1980. The management, the rooms and the culture. Employees aren't trusted on any level which creates resentful employees that stick around because it's easy and hard to get fired (union hotel). Resentful employees creates workers who only do the bare minimum which reinforces management's beliefs that they can't trust workers. Management then micro-manages making even minor changes difficult to come by. EVERYTHING requires multiple levels of approval from multiple managers. While the Benson is constantly searching for new owners, new owners will not fix the problem unless they wipe out the vast majority of this diseased company.

    Advice to Management

It is very difficult to offer advice-- the whole hotel needs a new owner and needs to start completely fresh.
