I worked at The Blackstone Group (More than a year)

    Pros

-Prestigious - No doubt that. I was getting a ton of traction on my resume because I could say I was at blackstone.
-Pay was solid - for a back office function pay was pretty good, nothing special.
-great networking opportunities for people with the drive to do so.

    Cons

I worked in legal and the people were generally miserable which caused a trickle down effect to the analysts/associates. The individual who hired me got a different job and her replacement was awful. She was snobby, pretentious and generally speaking an abysmal colleague. She fit the blackstone profile academically, but her personality and approach to dealing with junior staff was terrible. I know it's hard for prospective candidates to turn down a potential job or interview with such a well-known company, but definitely explore all of your options first. Just be weary - people are underhanded, unpleasant, they love asking "gotcha" questions to make you look and feel stupid. Your work and effort will never be appreciated by management so don't expect it. I cannot strongly enough encourage you to reconsider a job in Legal & Compliance here. The other groups seem to be much more pleasant and would provide for a better overall experience.

    Advice to Management

The respect at work training is worthless. Nobody adheres to any of the principles discussed during the training. I was let go because of a regime change and I wasn't offered the opportunity to move internally.

I worked at The Blackstone Group part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working part time the schedule is flexible. Most employees get a free lunch.

    Cons

Work environment is demeaning to low level employees, the office sometimes feels like a throwback to the 50s - few women in top level positions, administrative assistants definitely treated like "secretaries."

    Pros

Smart people, good compensation, decent benefits. The firm likes and promotes a very edgy culture. They know how to make good deals and make money for the investors. The bankers are truly world class professionals. If you want to be in Private Equity or M & A, this is a great place for you.

    Cons

Newish management in Finance has brought in a lot of people from a different firm who now run the place. People who were there before are being let go, overlooked for promotions, and have had their responsibilities moved to the newer people, leaving skilled people idle. If you aren't part of that club, you do not exist. Morale is low and although this has been brought to upper management and Human Resource's attention. The message is "leave if you don't like it." Communication from management is poor/nonexistent. Favoritism abounds and backstabbing is common. This used to be a place people were proud to say they worked. Not anymore.

    Advice to Management

Remember the people who who worked 24/7 to help the firm go public/make those millions for you. It's not necessary to toss them out/treat them like garbage and speaks volumes about your class and values.

Treat your team with respect, courtesy and decency. You can be good without deliberately pitting your people against each other.

    Pros

    Advice to Management

Don't forget about the little people
