I worked at The Body Shop full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Access to cruelty free products, benefits, helping out various charities and Samaritan efforts, carefree work environment, employee discounts and nice management.

    Cons

Retail always comes with blackout dates; holiday hours and closing times vary. If you cannot stand personally touching people this is not the job for you; need to sample products on customer's hand.

    Advice to Management

My manager and district mangers were great.

I have been working at The Body Shop part-time for less than a year

    Pros

45% employee discount You get to build relationships with coworkers since you're only working with 3-6 other people Lots of free products

    Cons

They put a big focus on how many sales you get and what's the average $ transaction you have, makes it feel like you are working commission

    Advice to Management

Everyone feels like they are in competition with each other and will take each other sales. Management should coach to the wanted behaviors and observe to see how associates are doing, instead of putting pressure and stress on them. Sometimes the KPIs they look at are not a true reflection of how good or bad an associate is at sales. You need to be very strict with your schedule. If you change your schedule even... once, just to help out, they will take advantage of you. They will try to push your hours even when you told them how many hours you'd like to work a week.

    Pros

Calm environment, nice employee discount and free product. Company provides lots of product knowledge.

    Cons

Always so kind of promotion that encourages the customer to stock up so they don't end up coming in as often. Outdated inventory, data, and register systems.

I worked at The Body Shop for less than a year

    Pros

After your trial period ends you get 5 pieces of makeup (women) or skincare (men) to take home. While there are no real bonus opportunities (except for store managers) there are often sales contests that can result in getting to take home a free product. Additionally, when a new product or line launches you are often given a product (or one form the line) to take home, though over the past few years these... opportunities seem to be less and less frequent. With the right staff and coworkers this can be a very fun job. Also, in my time at the store (2+ years) I saw several holiday associates and general associates promoted to assistant managers. However, once you are promoted to part time assistant manager there are very few opportunities to move up.

    Cons

The company does not seem to be doing particularly well. There is a holiday sales contest every year but it is incredibly hard to qualify and many stores will not have qualifying sales. Women are also required to wear five visible pieces of makeup typically lip, cheek and multiple eye colors. If you are not wearing the five pieces or if your manager does not thing your makeup is heavy enough you will be asked to put... more on. There are also frequent "spa parties" which often means you have to stay an hour or more over after close or come in early on a Sunday. Additionally, a decline in the quality of promotions and sales often leaves regular costumes frustrated. Lastly, "floor sets" are only done after store close. Stores are not given enough extra hours for these and they often end up going late or falling on the opener to complete.

I have been working at The Body Shop part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Free product, employee discount, air conditioning.

    Cons

Lack of support from management. The world of retail changed & the pressure to meet sales goals puts unneeded stress on a low wage job with no potential for growth. Loreal is too big & they have lost touch with what Anita Roddick started & wanted for The Body Shop.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. Recognize we are doing the best we can with a sour retail market, greater competition & the COMPLETE lack of social politeness.

I worked at The Body Shop for less than a year

    Pros

Staff was nice and you get the chance to earn lots of free product. They have good product training and the sales goals aren't that serious. It's fun to help people pick products that are right for them.

    Cons

If you get a promotion, be prepared to be underpaid as they claim to only be able to give a 20% raise each year. 20% may seem like a decent amount but when you go from a sales associate to an assistant manager you will be very underpaid compared to someone who started as an assistant manager. They are constantly running sales which makes it nearly impossible to sell anything not on sale and customers are often angry... when what they want is not discounted. They have better promotions online than in store and you will have many angry customers because of this as well. Their products are not as natural or fair trade as they claim and it's very misleading. Voicing your concerns to higher ups will get you nowhere. They will work you up to full time hours so that they don't have to pay you salary or give benefits and will promise promotions but continue to delay them and claim it is out of their control.

    Advice to Management

Be more transparent and professional. Support your in-store employees instead of sabotaging them. Don't make false promises and show that you value your employees otherwise your turnover will continue to be very high.

I have been working at The Body Shop part-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

GREAT discount, a lot of free product.

    Cons

Low wages, no balance between work life and home life. They work you full time without benefits. They push for high sales with no reward except for management, they get bonuses. Our store is running without a business license and corporate knows. Bills not being paid. Disappointed. Picked up a mother job just in case.

    Advice to Management

They really do not care, so no comment.
