I worked at The Buckle part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The job is commission based, so your paycheck results your performance. This can be a good or a bad thing. If you're a hard worker/at a busy location this is good. Slow days suck, however. Management is good in Columbia, MO. There's lots of talk about Buckle teammates being "catty" but I really enjoyed most of my teammates here. I felt like we truly worked as a team and tried to help one another rather than being rude about sales. Fairly laid back atmosphere. The managers (Alyssa and Ross) are both nice people and great at their job. You can definitely learn a lot from them and I felt like they were open to helping me often. They're also pretty good about scheduling and working around your availability which is nice.

    Cons

The DM could be a bit nit-picky at times. He often watches you very closely as well almost as if he's "babysitting." Overall, I think he's a good leader and encourages well, sometimes it can be a rough day if he's in a bad mood, though. If you're working hard and at least putting forth good effort though he usually sees that and isn't too hard on you. I would say he's a good boss overall. Scheduling can be rough as you often wouldn't get your schedule for the week until late Friday/early Saturday before the week started.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. Possibly schedule earlier. It was hard to plan anything around when you could possibly work the following week.

    Pros

I enjoyed many of the people that I worked with. Working in the back, every day felt like Christmas.

    Cons

The location I was at was going through a change. The manager that hired me was leaving the company and the new manager and myself did not see eye to eye.

I worked at The Buckle part-time

    Pros

Flexible scheduling, fun environment, good discount

    Cons

This position is mainly based on sales commissions. So you are forced to really push customers to purchase more in order to surpass your peers. I do not feel comfortable upselling people, so this job was not right for me. Also, the Buckle seems to be a tad behind in some styles. It took them forever to get Skinny Jeans and everyone asked which ones I was wearing and they were from Express because at the time Buckle did not sell any....

    Advice to Management

Get with the trends, advertise the position as SALES SALES SALES

I have been working at The Buckle full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

A culture of education, development, and leadership. Buckle is a fun, fast paced environment with great people, especially when it comes to the upper management within the company. Excellent benefits including a matched 401k, life insurance, great health/dental/vision plans, generous employee discount, and lots of additional options even including pet insurance!

    Cons

Buckle is a large company with a small company mentality that can be charming, but frustrating at times. Tech and IT issues are rampant and can bog down the effectiveness of stores' ability to function. Upward mobility can be difficult due to longevity of upper management and lack of available positions. Work/life balance is a challenge mainly with the nature of retail management and high turnover. Home office support to stores also leaves much to be desired, especially with stores operating 7 days a week and home office only being available M-F.

    Advice to Management

Create more positions for store managers to grow into! Retention of talent is difficult with a glass ceiling. Decentralize home office and have support available in more states and time zones. Having more transparency with store managers will allow them to make better decisions. It's difficult to be an effective manager when there is a lack of information to base key decisions on. Continue developing the culture of the company and never lose sight of the most important aspect: the power of the people who work for you.
