The office culture was upbeat and great! Treated employees as valuable members of a team

I worked at The Buffalo News full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Vacation time is good compared to similar jobs. After 3 full calendar years of full time work, I had 5 weeks of time (vacation + personal + sick)
    - Laid back work environment, for the most part
    - No time clock
    - Union membership

    Cons

    - Low starting pay with no raises to speak of.
    - Union membership is mandatory
    - Shift times and days off can be a little weird to cover production needs

    Advice to Management

Happy employees are productive employees who come to work on time, work hard, and go the extra mile. When you treat them as disposable, good luck asking them to put in extra, and expect them to do everything they can to nickel and dime you.

I worked at The Buffalo News (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Paid time off, casual work environment

    Cons

MONEY is very poor! No raise in 7 years for many people who were already earning below par wages. Little room for advancement.

    Advice to Management

Pay the employees what they are worth.

I have been working at The Buffalo News full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

In the automotive advertising section at The Buffalo News, you must adapt to learning new things quickly. It is an incredible environment to learn about advertising if it is an area that interests you. The team, while small, brings in a lot of revenue to the news as a whole. It is a fast-paced environment with a lot to do, a lot to learn, and you are never bored. The team is energetic and fun but focuses on getting the job done. All of advertising is leaving some of the print industry behind and incorporating more online/digital databases to be more efficient in the industry. These are exciting times. While many believe that print media is a dying brand, I see the potential here at The Buffalo News with everything they are implementing. This specific role works daily with other assistants, and sales reps to help them meet their goals. It is a fun and exciting work environment.

    Cons

Low pay, minimal room for growth within department

    Advice to Management

Keep on keepin' on. System updates are for the better. Positive feedback and constructive criticism are always welcomed and appreciated.

I worked at The Buffalo News full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

It's downtown, has free parking and everyone thinks you work someplace interesting.

    Cons

Absolute and complete frustration at all levels of the company due to misguided management, disgruntled employees, people working jobs they are not qualified to perform and a stubborn frustration to change to the 21st century. Backbiting, sexism, gossip, sabotage, you name it.

    Advice to Management

Clean house from the fifth floor down.

I have been working at The Buffalo News full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It's an easy job. The benefits are good if you can ever manage to get to that level of employment.

    Cons

Management couldn't care any less about its customers much less its employees. Employees with less responsibility were at grades of employments higher than others. There's absolutely no possibility for advancement. Management is petty and unreasonable and bullying.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the "peons" of your company. Stop screwing over the customers. Rethink your management choices. This is a business (a PRINT business) whose--let's be honest--life expectancy is dwindling quickly down the drain. The management at the Buffalo News is trying to shove it down the drain faster. Good luck!

I worked at The Buffalo News part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Tips from customers if you provide good service
Be your own boss (to some extent)
Good exercise with all the walking to deliver papers

    Cons

Have to work 365 days a year
Have to work in all weather conditions (snow, sleet, rain or wind)
Some of the penalties for missed deliveries, etc are ridiculous

    Advice to Management

Care about your carriers. They are the truly the face of the company

I worked at The Buffalo News full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Reasonably flexible scheduling if you are a part-time employee.
Wonderful employees that will be essential in keeping you sane.
    Practical experience.

    Cons

    Limited to Non-existent advancement opportunity.
    Pay well below national average.
Unless you manage to get a coveted and elusive full-time position, you will never qualify for health insurance.
Management severely disorganized and workflow is abysmal.

    Advice to Management

The need to streamline the production process should be your first priority. With some fine-tuning the pre-press production process could be a streamlined and efficient operation. Second priority should be the motivation of your staff. Morale and motivation is abysmal, literally the worst i have ever encountered. Focus on bringing your staff together as a unit, building morale, and increasing motivation. With proper motivation, your team can accomplish anything... on time with a smile.

    Pros

The people are nice to work with. The supervisors are easy to work with. The work is enjoyable. Nice cafe for lunches.

    Cons

You will never make any money at The News. No raises. If you even get benefits, they will be cut. You will work holidays. Upper management is very bull headed and cheap. No advancement.

    Advice to Management

Treat the employees with the respect they deserve. Employees are not the enemy. Everyone wants The News to succeed. The pay rate is too low. You can't live off of what The News pays.
