    Pros

Excellent place to stretch your abilities & skills - all roles require a roll up your sleeves approach and you constantly learn and develop beyond your remit Amazing collective - some of the most dedicated, resourceful, inspirational people I've worked with Fun & laid back atmosphere, some degree of flexibility around hours of work or location (working remotely is generally permitted for majority of roles) Mission,...

    Cons

Long hours if you work in programmes - a bit better in central support functions (though not much better) Over-reliance on the goodwill of staff to get things running, rather than through robust internal procedures, processes and systems/technology Appalling facilities (though I appreciate investment in facilities is not a priority given the tight resources) HR and systems...

    Advice to Management

Really listen and act on feedback from grassroots. Better performance management procedures and conversations - and stop tolerating staff mediocrity, particularly at management level. Get better at having difficult conversations (instead of asking overly qualified people to do entry level jobs to address a recurring problem, maybe deal with the shortcomings head on, push out the incompetent people that are perpetuating...

I worked at The Challenge full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The Challenge staff are all friendly and committed to what they do. People are friendly, they socialise out of work, often decide to live together in flat-shares; the vibe is young, excited and eager to work hard for a good cause. Many staff members set up groups for people with shared interests, ranging from French literature to knitting. It's not a hierarchical place - everyone can talk to anyone.

    Cons

Pay is not great, particularly when employees often put in incredibly long hours because management has allocated resources too thinly. It can feel like you're being used by the charity, and expected not to mind because you're 'doing your bit'. The summer programmes that they run are not well planned in many aspects, so summer staff often express dissatisfaction.

    Advice to Management

Address staff's key concerns: overwork + underpayment. Also stop moving on in new directions so quickly because it means that nothing is ever consolidated and improved upon.

I have been working at The Challenge full-time

    Pros

Very rewarding. People genuinely care about the cause they are working towards. Very friendly workplace

    Cons

Physically demanding. Long hours during summer time (short hours the rest of the year make up for this)

    Advice to Management

Currently understaffed, pay is not reflective of workload, especially during summer months.
