I worked at The Challenge full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Supporting and working with exceptional young people

    Cons

Exceptionally high staff turnover due to poor leadership and poor recruitment; A ‘them and us’ culture between the different programmes; An obvious (but ignored) lack of diversity at senior management level; Core functions like HR and finance are very disorganised; No career progression and low wages especially for female staff (as evidenced by the recent gender pay gap analysis)

    Advice to Management

In terms of social integration - practise what you preach

I worked at The Challenge full-time for more than a year

      Pros

I met some of the most dedicated, intelligent and hardworking people at The Challenge. They truly care about the young people they work with.

      Cons

Despite having been running for seven years they use being a start up as an excuse for the many systemic problems they face. They lack basic essentials such as HR systems and a proper technology support. Under the current CEO 4 million pounds has been lost over the last two years. Financial controls are practically non existent and tax payer’s money is being wasted. The directors are arrogant to the point of stupidity...

      Advice to Management

Stop ignoring the serious problems plaguing the organisation and take steps to modernise systems and retain staff. Hire directors with actual experience of running charitable organisations.

I worked at The Challenge for less than a year

        Pros

Very friendly staff members who are very supportive. A great work environment. The work they do makes a difference to the young people they work with. The work is very rewarding.

        Cons

They can be disorganised. The focus on targets for the number of young people completing the summer programmes means they do away with discipline and consequences for young people's who can behave as they like and will not be removed because the target number of young people completing the programme is most important. Discipline is not enforced on the programmes and this spoils them considerably.

        Advice to Management

I would say to get back to the ethos of the programme from when it started. Don't force young people to come if they don't want to. Have young people on the programme who want to be there and are invested in the idea and cause of the programme. Protect those who want to be there by discipling and removing those who do not. What is the point in having a disciplinary process if your managers do not follow it? You will destroy...

I have been working at The Challenge part-time

        Pros

Extremely rewarding work. The programme implements a huge vision (social inclusion and better equipping young people of all backgrounds for their future) in a practical way that really works.

        Cons

As with all rewarding posts, it requires a huge level of commitment, and can be exhausting. It's definitely worth the investment.

I have been working at The Challenge part-time

        Pros

Different great team of senior mentors to network and work with; wonderful experience working with different kinds of young people from different backgrounds; the activities - hiking, caving, abseiling and much more are awesome - need a lot of energy and rest for them ah-haa!

        Cons

Low atmosphere when it rains, especially during week 1, but you can only get the best out of it as much as you put in your best.

I worked at The Challenge for less than a year

        Pros

Personal development, everyday is different. When the programme runs smoothly, it is an amazing opportunity for young people.

        Cons

Can be stressful when you work on a big wave. It is also very tiring working on a full wave so make sure you get your sleep!

        Advice to Management

High quality of training for staff

I have been working at The Challenge part-time for less than a year

        Pros

        - good and supportive staff on the wave - Good experience - Made me realise more about myself - Helped me develope my independence - It helped me realise what I want to do as a career and how to do it. - The PL gave me feedback which I used to better my organisation and confidence. - The APL helped me out alot with the job. - The SMs were helpful and helped me out. - I was able to watch the young people have a good time...

        Cons

        - Stressful work and I was given two girls that were high support needs. - I had to disclose a disability and then the company didn't message back straight away so I worried they had sacked me most the summer so I didn't have time to research inclusion techniques. - inconsistant use of warnings, yellow card and red card. - Added pressure because the mums of the girls thought the girls were getting a teaching assistant...

        Advice to Management

        - Get more experienced staff in the office - Don't leave staff hanging for months after they have disclosed a disability to you. - More challenging behaviour training for staff on the ground - More support for support workers because it feels sometimes it is forgotten that even in the younge peoples free time and after 10:45 they are still working and alert in case the young people that are they assigned to need them...

I have been working at The Challenge

        Pros

A chance to have an impact on the lives of young people, breaking down the boundaries between them and inspiring them to become more involved in their community. Inspiring to be around these young people as they break racial and social stereotypes. Personal and professional development. I have worked several different roles on different levels over the past few years and keep coming back.

        Cons

Can at times be stressful, but you are always well prepared for this. Also, the summer roles aren't long enough, it's so fun and you feel like a real part of something, it's just a shame that the programme doesn't last all summer!

        Advice to Management

Always maintain a high level of transparency with staff to make sure everybody feels in the loop. Keep up the family culture as it really feels like you belong to something when working for The Challenge.
