    Pros

There are a lot of very talented individuals who are drawn to work at this hotel. The hotel has been extremely successful for many years - largely in part to its very strong business relationships with Harvard University - and its profitability does not go unrecognized by ownership, who are constantly investing in the asset as far as renovations and enhancements are concerned. The hotel does have some solid employee perks - like a free annual membership to the nearby gym/fitness center complex and discounted T passes - and you'll find a lot of people who are eager to make a difference in his/her role when they start working at the hotel.

    Cons

If you are mission-driven and want to feel like you have a say in the direction of the hotel, then you're looking at the wrong property. The hotel is EXTREMELY autocratic - as the property general manager is the ONLY individual who gets to make executive decisions at the end of the day. He is highly involved in the day-to-day operation - which is not necessary a bad thing on the surface, but this extreme level of involvement does become a problem when attempts are made to change the work culture to be more pro-employee. Besides the basic benefits listed above, there are few to zero indicators that upper management sincerely is willing to grow and develop the talent that is brought to the property. The industry widely regards the hotel as one of the most difficult places to work (if you are a mid-level manager) because of it's lack of empowerment, trust and investment placed in its associates. Consequently, the staff turnover rate is extremely high at this hotel - more than most others in the market. Have a look at Hcareers and you will see how many positions are ALWAYS open.

    Advice to Management

There will come a day when this kind of management style will not work for the hotel and will need to diminishing profits. I'm not sure when that day will come, but rest assured the current practices of caring little about the mid-level, ambitious manager does not sit well with the newer work generation.

I have been working at The Charles Hotel full-time

    Pros

Depending on position; relatively low stress & pressure. Guaranteed high volume of business due to location and lack of direct competitors. Amazingly inexpensive benefits. Paid sick and vacation leave. Amazingly supportive and involved General Manager.

    Cons

Some people have worked there for 20 years and will never change their ways. High turnover for anyone with less than 10 years. Many people use it as a stepping stone to a better position. Lack of standard operating protocol for many things. No union. Some other hotels pay better depending on position. I think mediocrity in some areas is accepted because it's always busy anyways.

    Advice to Management

Don't always accept the status quo, embrace productive change.

I worked at The Charles Hotel full-time

    Cons

Not overly flexible with time off. A lot of turnover in just the one year I was there. Finding a parking spot was a daily challenge.
