I worked at The Clorox Company as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Diverse background of people and I learned a lot from coworkers. Unfortunately I was only a temporary employee.

    Cons

None that I could see of. Most employees seemed quite happy and interested in their projects.

I have been working at The Clorox Company full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A lot of perks - half day summers, commuter share, product freebies, people are very nice and very collaborative

    Cons

Analysis paralysis, leadership team is not strategic risk takers. Can be quite patriarchal - it is a 100+ year company after all. Sees the big picture, doesn't act - everything boils down to how much you are spending which can be myopic.

    Advice to Management

It will be hard to attract and retain top talent especially when there are all these other tech companies with the same or better perks to choose from. Management needs to empower their employees, make decisions and not be so penny wise and pound foolish.

    Pros

Work-life balance is good. You are able to get multiple project roles (e.g. processing, packaging, and product developer). You will learn business and have opportunity to stretch in other functions (e.g. marketing, sales, consumer insights). Everyone here is smart so you are constantly being challenged and learn new ideas. People are great to work with (little passive aggressive) but overall good intention.

    Cons

Management does not "people manage" anymore. They are more concern about their own "career outlook" with this new structure- rewarded more on project then people development (and will sacrifice their direct reports). Career development is limited here as well: new technical structure has it only a certain number of scientist and fellows per department and business. A lot of those positions are with young scientist - so no retirement anytime soon. So you will advance to only a certain level- in some spots these upper position are already filled. Management track: think Hunger Games. Overall this place use to value individual thoughts and approaches- rewarded based on performance. Now it seems it rewards those who look the other way and make things look good (and cost save) regardless of impact long-term. Moral is really low across the board and everyone is looking elsewhere for new opportunity.

    Advice to Management

Change starts top down- don't say "why not working" but still use and do the same old thing. Invest in your people (not just say it) - show it.

I have been working at The Clorox Company full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

My co-workers are great! The work is interesting.
Good work-life balance: 1/2 day Fridays in the summer, I typically only work 40 hour work weeks, I'm able to work from home if needed, maternity leave is good & management is understanding about the trials of new parenthood (how you actually have to take all of your sick time).

    Cons

Clorox definitely favors those who move around a lot (within the company) over those who like to stay in a position. If you find a job that you enjoy & want to stay in that position for more than 2 years, it is very difficult to get promoted.

    Advice to Management

Talk with your direct reports often about their careers & what their goals are. Employees should never be surprised by a performance review. Make it clear what is expected to reach the next level.

    Pros

The people, solid company strategy, work life balance, career development, advancement opportunities

    Cons

Salaries (underpaid), decision making can be slow / approval possesses, corporate offices split between Oakland and Pleasanton

    Advice to Management

Continue to support process improvement and aggressively peruse growth opportunities, don't be afraid to take larger risks. Increase salaries to better align with Bay Area wages!

I have been working at The Clorox Company full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

A wide variety of opportunities to grow and stretch. Demonstrate your expertise and ability to handle complexity and watch your career grow here. Growing more and more comfortable with diversity every day. Work-life balance is refreshing here.

    Cons

Not really cons - more just observations: It can take time to get started, and you must be aware of, respect, and largely adhere to the climate and prevailing perspectives of the day. Patience and hard work are generally rewarded, but waiting for career growth here can be a somewhat long and challenging task. While recruitment, acceptance, promotion, and leveraging of diversity have improved tremendously, there is still room to grow here.

    Advice to Management

Keep going - you're doing a great job. Stay open, and please try to push the boundaries on seeking, recognizing, rewarding, and compensating your talent.

I have been working at The Clorox Company full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The people are truly the best part of Clorox. I am surrounded by smart, enthusiastic, and kind people. Work-life balance is great. Flexible daily schedules and WFH are not frowned upon at all.

    Cons

On-boarding for new college hires could be better. HR department could be smoother and more responsive. Salary could be more competitive for Bay Area.
