I have been working at The Clorox Company full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people is the best asset - they do really care about the company.
Leaders are truly invested in their teams and very knowledgeable in their field.
Work Life Balance is not only important but it is a cultural trait.

    Cons

Growth opportunities are scarce at certain levels
Benefits like bonus are low versus the industry

    Advice to Management

Great communication. You (Executives) are doing great sharing where are we going, what is important and what's the plan to get there.

Pay more attention to how values are truly lived by all senior leaders. Some leaders are "untouchable" even when they don't necessarily display the company values. People fear sharing their thoughts about them.

I have been working at The Clorox Company full-time

    Pros

None that I can think of beyond a pretty campus.

    Cons

R&D at the Pleasanton site is mean-spirited, myopic, cliquey, and full of managers who think their job is to belittle and diminish people who aren't exactly like them - They don't like or want people with advanced degrees, experience garnered outside the Clorox company, ability to think scientifically, or interest in thinking independently. They talk a big game, but their actions drive all of the talent out of the R&D organization. SO if you want to work somewhere full of cliques and bad behaving people in positions of authority, be paid 20% below standard for the SF Bay area, and drink whatever Koolaid management wants to feed you at the time, this may be the place for you. If you have scientific integrity, want to be valued for your knowledge, experience, and contributions to your workplace, find any other company in the Bay area.

I worked at The Clorox Company full-time

    Pros

    People are generally nice
Some of the brands are great to work with and really want to try out new things
There's very little pressure (at least if you're used to working anywhere else in the area)

    Cons

Nothing changes here. It's almost impossible to get anything done. People will just ignore emails no matter how important they are if you don't cc their manager.

Their tech people are the absolute worst I've ever worked with in my career. I think largely because there's a lot of competition for tech people and Clorox isn't a "sexy" company to work for, they get the dregs of the newly minted computer science degree holders. Being an old company, they also don't have the people who can judge tech and data people. It's a vicious cycle. They routinely make mistakes that are just basic and cannot understand what the mistake was even when pointed out and problems arise.

There's no transparency from department to department or even within departments. People are often working at cross purposes but don't know it, or are working on the same things. Some orgs may work differently. I'm only commenting on my experience. What I experienced was a lot of people who sat in a seat long enough to get promoted. Given that they don't understand a lot of the new world of business, they're unable to judge the value of the work and care more about who the loudest voice in the room is than they do good reasoning or support from data and research.

Maybe worst of all, people waste time in endless meetings with Powerpoints that are essentially Word documents with a few pictures. Basic communication skills and reasoning is really weak at Clorox. Most of the vendors Clorox chooses seem like sideshow barkers more than professionals. It's a mess.

    Advice to Management

You need an outside consulting firm, a competent one with a proven track record, to help you assemble teams for new initiatives. Hire a full third party to handle all your tech and data work until you have a firm foundation. Your current team is amateurism and lacks the aptitude or experience to be in the positions they're in.
