I worked at The Commercial Appeal full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent digital advertising training and experience surrounding multiple platforms

    Cons

Revolving door of sales executives. Constant layoffs and changes within the paper industry. High expectations with limited management. Territory based versus vertical. Mostly set it and forget it campaigns with little knowledge of what's happening on the backend -- which is the campaign managers job, but speaking from personal experience, it's much more valuable to be able to touch and see what's happening on the back end from Google Analytics or internal dashboards rather than have a hands-off model. Overall, a very lackluster experience, but the bar wasn't set very high. Take the opportunity to gain digital advertising experience and move on.

    Advice to Management

Management is spread too thin. This is a common story for most of print media these days.

I have been working at The Commercial Appeal full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good people to work with; sort of like a family. Most people have been here over 40 years.

    Cons

Times have changed for the industry Lots of lay-offs No raises in over 3 years Most employees who have worked here most of their lives are now discarded for newer more naive employees willing to work for less pay but also do sub par work

    Advice to Management

Everyone in the company matters NOT just the advertising team

    Pros

The people are generally friendly and try to help you succeed.

    Cons

The products they sell are mediocre at best and once customers realize this they don't sign and don't come back.

    Advice to Management

Train employees longer and stop with the promotions and gimmicks. They don't work overall and make you look tacky and cheap.

I worked at The Commercial Appeal full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The co-workers were the only pros in the end of my 10 year tenure. Close proximity the the interstate for work commute.

    Cons

Untrustworthy management, no loyalty to good employees, not enough work/life balance, lack of job security. The company was previously a great place to work, with great employee health benefits, pensions, etc. However, over the years the mismanagement continued to worsen, and attempts to "fix" the problems by bringing in people from markets from the other side of the country who would not listen to anyone regarding the market the newspaper served, who were completely out of touch with the employees, the readers and the advertisers. The culture changed so drastically it was unrecognizable.

    Advice to Management

It's not all about you. Your unwillingness to even attempt to fit into the existing culture of the company and completely ruin the culture almost overnight has cost you the top performing employees from every department. You have chased so many knowledgeable, and talented employees away that I have no good advice for you because all you are left with now is your big ego's and big salaries. You ruined a great company, best of luck in the next year or two when corporate begins to see through your smoke and mirrors game and you move on to ruin other companies and it's employees lives.
