    Pros

People who work there are friendly for the most part and care about what they do. Brand is well known in the market

    Cons

Company is struggling to stay afloat. Have had two major layoffs within the past 15 months. Perception in the marketplace is very negative which makes it very difficult to achieve any type of success. Benefits and pay are well below industry standards. No room for advancement as they continue to reduce headcount.

The Commercial Appeal was a wonderful place to work

    Pros

I worked at the Commercial Appeal for 9 years and loved it for the most part. Many wonderful people had worked there for decades but were welcoming to newer employees. I managed a department and was able to implement new ideas and programs with good support from the leadership. Had a family atmosphere.

    Cons

With the challenges in the newspaper industry and the subsequent consolidations of ownership, a lot has been lost. My ratings below reflect my feelings prior to ownership changes.

    Pros

I learned so much and loved the pace. Fast pace with hard deadlines definitely a pro for me because I love the adrenaline. I obtained great people skills. Very goal oriented place to work. Resources were available to increase your skill set and on the job training was in abundance.

    Cons

Even though I am no longer employed with the company I have none.

    Pros

Prior years were excellent. Very good place to work. Family atmosphere.

    Cons

As the years go by the ability to create a family atmosphere disappeared. Nobody wants to read a newspaper that is filled with news that you already know. They cut the wrong staff and did not retain talent.

    Pros

With the recent acquisition of ReachLocal you have the most comprehensive and effective digital product suite in the marketplace. Whether it's SEM, SEO, display, video, web, branded content, retargeting, geo-fencing, e-mail blast, or listings management you have it at your disposal. Great comp plan that allows you to flex your earnings as high as you can achieve. Managers are very experienced and will roll up their sleeves and sell with you. Great training!! Good culture where you are recognized and rewarded and always feel valued.

    Cons

Perception doesn't always match reality. Individuals at times view you as a newspaper when in reality you are a digital first multi-media company with a nationwide reach.

Mission remains strong, but no people left to do the job

    Pros

The people left standing at 495 Union live and breathe journalism and care deeply about the Memphis community. Their belief in the mission remains strong.

    Cons

The staff was gutted by Scripps over the past decade as the newspaper industry struggled. Major cuts were made in the newsroom to both the editing and reporting ranks, and the operations and business sides were slashed, too. Since its recent purchase by Gannett, which enacted even more severe cuts, the newspaper is but a shadow of its former self, and its prospects appear quite grim.

A decent springboard for other advertising opportunities

Jan 22, 2017 - Account Executive in Memphis, TN

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Decent digital advertising training and experience surrounding multiple platforms

    Cons

Revolving door of sales executives. Constant layoffs and changes within the paper industry. High expectations with limited management. Territory based versus vertical. Mostly set it and forget it campaigns with little knowledge of what's happening on the backend -- which is the campaign managers job, but speaking from personal experience, it's much more valuable to be able to touch and see what's happening on the back end from Google Analytics or internal dashboards rather than have a hands-off model. Overall, a very lackluster experience, but the bar wasn't set very high. Take the opportunity to gain digital advertising experience and move on.
