I have been working at The Container Store full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I have met truly inspirational and like minded people here.

    Cons

Full time has become very difficult. Our Foundation Principle of 1=3 is more like 1=5. Never enough staffing and lots of comments from customers about lack of service. With the introduction of TCS Closets, we seem to be struggling with lack of time to really address customers that wish to make a sizable purchase of $20,000 or more. Man in the desert selling is non existent, more like point and hope the customer finds it. Full time staff handles most of the customer complaints. Really nothing like the company I signed on with 13 years ago. To the complaint that full time staff just hangs out in the back or stands around talking I can assure you we are working on a TCS Closet, a customer complaint or trying to fix holes in the schedule. In my store Full Time staff work very hard.

    Advice to Management

Drop the platitudes about communication and employee first culture. We are becoming just another big box retailer with difficult payroll expectations, not enough staff frustrating days of customer complaints. Please remember, "we do sell the hard stuff" and with out enough people on the floor, lots of customer just walk out.

I have been working at The Container Store full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Fairly laid-back culture, generally friendly coworkers

    Cons

Going public has changed the culture, but it's still better than most. Senior Management is a mixed bag

    Advice to Management

Acknowledge that going public has changed our culture

I have been working at The Container Store part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people are great, that's it. Most employees have quit due to the structure of TCS and it's just not the same culture anymore. No one stays very long, don't drink the cool-aid.

    Cons

Lack of hours given to all part time employees. They need to lure new ones in and give them hours of training. Just another cog in the machine,

    Advice to Management

Can't give advice to people who are just following a broken system.

I have been working at The Container Store full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Co-workers, products - I believe in what I sell.

    Cons

Have fallen into the ZERO payroll cycle that happens after a company goes public. Stores don't have the hours needed to run with the service level expected and customers are accustomed to. I don't see a future for myself after 8+ years. Burn and turn.

    Advice to Management

Stop moving away from the foundation in the rush to move forward. Grass is not always greener!

I worked at The Container Store part-time

    Pros

Good company policy and training lead to great managers who directed the store well and made for a great retail work experience. Employees are made to feel heard and valued, and it is reflected in the teamwork and output of everyone on shift.

    Cons

There are typical retail pitfalls when the store is very busy i.e. weekends and holidays.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at The Container Store full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Earn great pay, especially if you work 6 days per week.
Tips can range from $20 to +$100, depending on size of install and the neighborhood customer lives in.
Flexible hours: schedule set every 2 weeks. You can request days/weeks off if you provide 2 weeks notice.

    Cons

Most customers are great, but some can be very difficult.
    Lots of driving.
About 75% of the time, orders you pick up from the store are missing materials. Very inconvenient for you and the customer, especially when you have to drive 45 minutes back to the store for one missing part, 45 min back to customers home. You are expected to finish installs in the same day (unless it's a large job). All the added drive time makes this tough.

    Advice to Management

Every manager I dealt with was amazingly helpful and considerate. Figure out a way improve efficiency for orders being picked up by installers. Orders with missing product can ruin your day.
