I worked at The Engine Group full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Friendly, competent people below the management level
    - Easy to meet vague, unspecified expectations

    Cons

I was working as a software developer at Blueye Creative when it was purchased by Engine Media. I am unsure if Engine Media still employs software developers as all of us working there at the time have quit or been laid off.

Management clearly did not know what to do with us. On day one, they lauded the benefits they would be giving the employees they were acquiring before informing all the software developers that none of of those benefits applied to them. Our salaries were replaced with wages, our health benefits were taken away (for the 60+ days allowed by law), and we received different signed agreements than the other full-time employees. Even direct deposit was not allowed, and our paychecks ended up being wrong or late a few times.

Until we left, we were made to feel unwelcome by the new management. There were little things like not giving us Engine Media email accounts and larger things like organizing company outings for everyone except the developers. Shortly before the last of us left or were laid off, the company moved offices and required all of the developers to start working remotely.

As I said, I am unsure if Engine Media still employs developers. If they do, I would caution any non-contract developer to stay far, far away.

    Advice to Management

If you say that you want all employees to feel welcome and included, actually make a concerted effort to make that happen.

    Pros

In the vast majority of cases, great people, interesting work and a supportive environment.

    Cons

The Group's senior leadership team needed to make the minds up if they wanted group agencies to collaborate or compete, and structure and incentives accordingly.

    Advice to Management

I worked at The Engine Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Central offices which are easy to get to
    Cheap bar with good food
Standard benefits you would expect from a large company

    Cons

-Long hours due to a lack of staff
    -Very poor pay
-A general lack of care over individuals
-Some of the agencies are very cliquey and not very friendly
-The benefits are average considering they've won awards from the Times for being a top employer
-The building is shabby in certain areas, looks impressive from the outside but when you look a little closer it could use improvements

    Advice to Management

Recognise that your staff are people not machines and treat them accordingly! If you're going to expect hours of overtime at the very least try and provide a competitive salary.

Spend too much money working so near to Oxford Street! But the location is great, being so central.
