Great place to learn, ok place to grow

Aug 19, 2021 - Talent Agent Assistant in Beverly Hills, CA

    Pros

Strong sense of community amongst assistants and sometimes agents. Great place for learning about the industry and starting your career. If you want to stay and make, they will support you but you REALLY have to work for it, as only so many people can get promoted.

    Cons

The size of the company can lead to log jams in moving up the ladder. If you're passed over for coordinator, it's unlikely you'll see much growth after that as coordinators will perform that job for 1-2 years before making Agent (in Talent anyway). Not really a con just a reality of a mid-size agency

As bad as you’ve heard agencies can be.

    Pros

You’ll bond with fellow assistants, you’ll learn basic rhythms of being an assistant, you’ll maybe make some useful industry connections.

    Cons

Company is cheap – comparatively low hourly rate, hours are policed and you’re pressured to under-report, you’ll be strung along for a raise you won’t get, you’ll only see a comped meal at this place if you are a) a talent assistant and b) it’s pilot season. Agents here are petty, even more than at a bigger agency because they are trying to compensate for Gersh’s dinky reputation. Lots of terrible personalities and maladjusted people. Having Gersh on your résumé is not the ticket that other agencies’ names are. Smaller size means favoritism goes a long way – well-liked people rise from asst to agent in 2-3 years, others will have to fight their way through every step and maybe get there in 6 years. Company is not interested in change, wants to put every client in a network TV show and milk them for commission. Agents are cliquey and often resent each other, so there’s little creative thinking when it comes to clients’ career paths. There is only one Black agent at the company (in both LA and NY offices) and assistants of color are treated terribly by HR, often driven out of the company.

A company stuck in the 90s

    Pros

Excellent clients and a smaller agency provide a work environment where everyone seems to know one another.

    Cons

The lack of base pay increases for assistants, coupled with incredibly outdated practices, make for a dismal time.

    Pros

opportunity can pop up quickly family owned business with a long history several very strong depts

    Cons

your success in part will depend on the desk you are on, although this is true throughout the business. company can do a better job of developing assistants and supporting them. not the most forward-thinking, often relying on the tried and trued methods that crank out money - but inhibit growth for innovation in the future.
