"Big global company, clicky and poorly managed teams"

I worked at The Gettys Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Good exposure to the hospitality industry.
    - Great cross-team collaboration (i.e design team works along with branding team)
    - Great CEO with industry-breakthrough ideas
    - Designers are generally good, hard-working people

    Cons

    - Design leads have limited exposure to OTHER firms and therefore they only hold 1 answer to all problems.
    - A lot of projects aren't design driven. More about timeline and completing work promptly.
    - Design team is split into two teams... One team does fun, more spatial renovations/new builds. Other team does primarily FFE projects and so little importance is placed on the architectural aspects of the space.
    - Some design directors have a really heavy attitude and little patience, not to mention their ego is huge. A lot and I mean A LOT of people have left because of this.
    - Some design directors love to micromanage the team, which definitely doesn't help boost the morale of younger designers.
    - Some design directors are OFTEN away from the studio, which is difficult when making decisions.
    - Only one woman in leadership team. This needs to change to have more balance.
    - Too many junior staff and not enough hierarchy within design team to allow for mentorship and structuring of teams.
    - No real const. document standards :(

    Advice to Management

    - Be more open minded to other people's ideas.
    - People with attitude, big egos and little patience shouldn't be running a team.
    - When representing the firm at industry events, ALL employees should understand that poor conduct (vulgar, lots of drinking) is a direct representation of the firm and therefore everyone should be on their best behavior.

    Pros

Gain a good understanding of Hospitality Industry

    Cons

Known throughout industry as a place to work for only a couple of years. No investment in people. Designers forced to copy and knock-off designs.

    Advice to Management

The egos in management are Trump-like and they will never take advice.

I worked at The Gettys Group full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Having the Plato to see everything on a grand scale and be hands on with other designers. The people are great to speak with its a great atmosphere and wonderful attitudes.

    Cons

Poor treatment of employees with lower titles than the higher ups. A lot of the things people could do for themselves, they instead put their load on one single person- to do the work that is "beneath them"-- and if everyone in the firm does that imagine the load that one person has.

    Advice to Management

Be kind to the small people of the firm because they are the spine that supports Gettys.

I have been working at The Gettys Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Their projects will look nice in your portfolio.
The managing director in Hong Kong is a fair person who will help you and your design abilities to grow professionally.
    Amazing colleagues.

    Cons

The company has changed and except for the offices in Hong Kong and Miami, women are not promoted as much as men. Management no longer treat women fairly in this company.

    Advice to Management

Promote and hire more women in leadership roles.

    Advice to Management

    Pros

    1. Senior Leadership is comprised of talented, creative and forward thinking individuals.
    2. Fun, relaxed culture is a marriage between left brain and right brain thinking.
    3. Great benefits package
    4. Approachable and supporting administrative staff
    5. Exciting and rewarding projects.
    6. Great location in the heart of River North

    Cons

    1. Office layout and design could use a touch-up
    2. More team building or related events outside of the office.

    Advice to Management

I would recommend management share the success stories from individual projects and project teams to the entire studio. This would help celebrate and inspire the creative staff.

I worked at The Gettys Group full-time

    Pros

The Accounting team at Gettys is a great place for a recent college grad or someone with a couple of years of experience. You will be able to work on a myriad of tasks that you might not have been able to access at a big corporation.

The team is encouraging, helpful, and extremely knowledgeable.

    Cons

In the Accounting team, specifically, it felt like there was little room for growth. However, this is understandable considering the current size of the company.

Our team felt understaffed for the rapid growth of the operation.

    Advice to Management

There are a lot of wonderful team members that should be recognized and a bigger effort should be made to retain those employees at Gettys.

    Pros

360 view of and exposure to the hospitality design business. Pretty cool coworkers. Interesting projects.

    Cons

Overworked and underpaid is what you should know before getting a job there. It really is a sweatshop that churns out designs with almost no appreciation.

    Advice to Management

Treat the people who work like dogs for you with respect. Pay them fair wages.
