I have been working at The Gladstone Institutes (Less than a year)

    Pros

It is a very good place for postdocs. Gladstone provide excellent scientific training and generous benefit for postdocs. In addition, Gladstone provides awesome working environment and scientific atmosphere.

    Cons

Although the salary for postdocs is higher than that of postdocs working at UCSF. It is still hard to afford to live in San Francisco, especially for people have little kids.

    Advice to Management

Good management. Very well organized and efficient. Maybe Gladstone need to work on postdoc mentoring and provide more job opportunity for postdocs.

I worked at The Gladstone Institutes full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Completely depends on who is your PI. Some are great mentors who are passionate about science and care for their students. Some are 100% selfish and show concern for themselves, their image.

    Cons

You must create data or you are going to be yelled at in group meetings. Ego-driven atmosphere.
Some floors have have a small number of labs compared to other floors. which limits effective intercommunication and fruitful discussions.

    Advice to Management

Forget your image, be real scientists.

I have been working at The Gladstone Institutes full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Incredible researchers, world class facility and unrivaled retirement plan. In the best area to work in SF (everything's new, clean, spacious and mostly sunny)

    Cons

Researchers instead of seasoned administrative professionals run the place. Admin as a whole is treated like a neccessary evil. Administrative leadership cowers to keep top researchers on board since they are the money makers. Every floor in the building is ran like a seperate empire so expectations and opinions vary wildly depending on who your providing support to. Popularity and being valued has less to do with your contributions as much as it has to staying out of people's way so they can do as they wish.

    Advice to Management

Run the organization as a united front. Don't fall to the whims of migrant staff which change like gradeschool . Gladstone administration used to be a cherished entity by previous top leadership and that transcended throughout but is no longer there. Work to bring it back and let squeeling wheel fall off the 18 wheeler titan of discovery. It'll ultimately be much better off.

I worked at The Gladstone Institutes full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nice colleagues, nice location, great benefits and perks. Most seniority were pretty friendly and welcoming.

    Cons

Personally would have liked to interact with the President more. Also personally would have like to have had a supervisor who wasn't busy all the time to where they don't have time for new employees.

    Advice to Management

Make time to properly train your new employees if you want results. Not hand holding but guidance and mentoring. Also don't bash employees or make them feel stupid when they have a question. Don't be so egotistical or think you're better than anyone.

Excellent resources, great coworkers, excellent Christmas lunch :)

    Cons

Definitely not 9-5 M-F, but that's to be expected in research

I worked at The Gladstone Institutes as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

I got to work with some great people at Gladstone. Everyone was always so nice and encouraging and excited to share their research with you and answer any questions. It was definitely a great place to intern. Interns are treated very well and my bosses were very aware of my class load and exam times when assigning projects.

    Cons

Nothing really. I brought lunch because there weren't a lot of food options super close by and Mission Bay is a little out of the way from most places in SF.

I worked at The Gladstone Institutes (More than a year)

    Pros

I enjoyed working at Gladstone. The facilities are top notch and the ability to access other amenities through UCSF is unique.

    Cons

I was a UCSF graduate student there but I feel that Gladstone, in general, is a little bit more geared towards post docs and staff scientists. That said, it varies lab to lab and there were a ton of great graduate student-heavy labs there.
