I worked at The Hanover Insurance Group for less than a year

    Pros

Consistent working days (9-4:30), flexible scheduling (easy to get a day off if needed), strong 1-on-1 coaching and technical skills training with organized workshops and weekly meetings, strong emphasis on company values and service

    Cons

Worcester is not a great city, work sometimes felt like busywork, not easy to get a full time offer (seems to depend on if there is an opening in the specific department you are working in - if there isn't an opening, you won't get an offer)

"PL Underwriting: Howell Office is the Red Headed Stepchild"

I have been working at The Hanover Insurance Group full-time

    Pros

Great PTO, and some work-from-home opportunities (although inconsistent)

    Cons

Outside of PTO, most other benefits are extremely sub-par (healthcare offers many options but is still expensive). Even though the Howell office is responsible for most of the written premium of the company, employees are treated as “less than”. There is also a huge double standard between home office and field offices (case in point: Worcester has about the same number of underwriters as Howell despite the fact... that Howell’s workload is much greater. Howell is required to stay open until 6pm, while home office is not. Howell underwriters are not allowed to work from home full time, but other hubs seem to have more flexibility. At times, the Worcester underwriters are secretly allowed to leave early, and Howell is not - Terrible for employee morale). PL Underwriting management (upper management to be exact) is extremely detached from the work that their employees do every day. They constantly make decisions that are so out-of-touch with the team (and our agency partners), and take things too personally when suggestions to the contrary are made. Management constantly claims that they are open to innovation and new ways of doing things, but if you are the kind of person who challenges the status quo, your motivation will eventually be sucked dry here. The Howell Underwriting hub has had tremendous turnover issues over the last year, largely due to the issues described above.

    Advice to Management

-Understand and appreciate the POV of your underwriters, who are the face of the company in many ways -Show more appreciation for the work that is done -Take the time to sit down with your employees and actually experience what they do every day -Stop taking constructive criticism personally and be open to new ways of doing things -Take responsibility for the turnover issue. The retention problems are not caused by... the employees or even middle management. They are caused by upper level leadership that is detached and too stuck in their ways, and who won’t give middle management the freedom to manage in a healthy way. You can offer all the PTO in the world, but you will never retain top talent if you don’t SHOW them (not just tell them occasionally) that they are appreciated. Stop micromanaging, and stop treating each employee like a number. When you lose half of a team in a year (when they’ve had the same great manager and supervisor for several years), it’s time to start asking “why”.

    Pros

Good work life balance, Worcester home office provides opportunity for visibility.

    Cons

Talent development program still in its infancy. Oh the job training primarily. Significant number of management hired from outside of company.

I have been working at The Hanover Insurance Group full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

-Internal mobility: lots of opportunities for growth within the organization -Valued: my accomplishments are always recognized and awarded by management -Change: the Partner Group is not only talking about change, but putting their words into action. Collaboration spaces, HIVE, Innovation District, etc. all part of the innovative initiative which is certainly coming into fruition -Flexibility: I have the ability... to work from home whenever. I do not feel micro-managed ever.

    Cons

-Pay could be a little higher, but understandable due to cost of living in Worcester being a lot lower compared to other larger cities

    Advice to Management

-Continue setting goals and bringing them into fruition. I can't wait to see what this place becomes over the next few years! So much good alone has happened within the past 2 years thanks to the right leaders being in charge.

I have been working at The Hanover Insurance Group full-time

    Pros

-Organizational values. -Coworkers - everyone is always willing to lend a hand. -Salary is decent, but the overall benefits package is great. -Willing to make the changes necessary to remain competitive. -Flexible work arrangements.

    Cons

-Must be in Worcester to move up in the company. -Budget constraints are starting to negatively impact the ability to do our job. -Would be nice to work remotely most of the time, as opposed to being allowed a certain number of days per month.

    Advice to Management

Communication between mid and senior level management needs to be better and more consistent. We're often told why something will need to change without being given a reason why.

I worked at The Hanover Insurance Group full-time

    Pros

Hanover is considered land of opportunities in Worcester. Loved working for this company , great people to work with and in a very friendly environment. Very flexible with work hours and remote work options when needed.

    Cons

Exposure to new and emerging technologies is minimal.

    Advice to Management

Awareness on new & emerging technologies in the market is very important for every employee to be competitive and catch up with outside world and also for good career growth. Offering more training and awareness sessions is needed
